Dear Parents, Guardians & Carers,
As we look forward to Open Morning this weekend, I have been reflecting on the different stages of the journey pupils take during their time at Truro School, and the many ways in which they grow in confidence, independence and ambition along the way.
One of our ongoing priorities is helping pupils develop greater independence in their learning. While this is often discussed in terms of study habits and academic progress, it can also be seen in the confidence pupils develop to contribute, take responsibility and embrace new challenges.
This week alone, I have seen examples of that journey at every stage of school life. It has been a pleasure to see how well our Year 7 pupils have settled into Senior School. One pupil who was understandably nervous when joining us in September particularly made me smile this week as I watched him confidently contribute to class discussion in front of his class. For him, that confidence is every bit as significant as any academic measure of success.
For our Year 9 pupils, learning has extended beyond the classroom through fieldwork on the River Kenwyn. It was particularly pleasing to overhear pupils discussing the trip and comparing their findings whilst queuing for lunch later in the day. It was a good indication that they are genuinely engaged with their learning.
At the other end of the school, students attending this week’s Aspiring Oxbridge Applicants talk were encouraged to think ambitiously about their future pathways. Whatever their eventual destination, opportunities such as these help pupils to cultivate academic curiosity and self-discipline that enable them to fulfil their potential. They also reinforce an important message: achievement is rarely the product of talent alone, but of sustained effort, and a willingness to embrace challenge.
This week also provided an opportunity to welcome many Year 8 parents to our Parent Meet and Greet event. As pupils begin to think more carefully about the choices and opportunities that lie ahead, the partnership between home and school becomes increasingly important. Working together allows us to support pupils as they develop not only academically, but also personally.
Alongside these experiences, we continue to focus on helping pupils develop the habits that underpin successful learning and future success. Whether through managing academic commitments or, as many students are doing this week, organising volunteering activities as part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, pupils are developing the habits that underpin future success.
Tomorrow’s Open Morning will provide prospective families with an opportunity to see this journey in action. I hope visitors will see not only the breadth of opportunities available to our pupils, but also a community where young people are encouraged to grow in confidence and make the most of the opportunities before them.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support. I wish you and your families a restful and enjoyable weekend.
With best wishes,
Miss Lucy Coleridge
Assistant Head (Learning and Teaching)

Uniform Expectations
Our uniform is an important part of our shared identity at Truro School. Wearing it well helps create a sense of belonging, equality and pride in our community, as well as ensuring pupils arrive each day ready for school. We would be grateful for your support in ensuring your child comes to school each day wearing the correct uniform.
Our full uniform requirements can be found here.
As the warmer weather comes to an end, we share the following information to support conversations at home about appropriate uniform. Pupils may wear a coat to school, but coats should not be worn in lessons, assemblies and Chapel or in the dining hall. A coat does not replace a blazer: pupils are expected to bring and wear their blazer each day, unless given permission by a member of staff to remove it. Hoodies and non-uniform jumpers are not permitted as alternatives to a coat or blazer.
We also ask pupils to arrive at the dining hall dressed in accordance with our uniform expectations. Where this is not the case, they will be asked to correct their uniform before joining the lunch queue, including retrieving their blazer if necessary. Staff may issue a uniform feedback where expectations are not met. Three uniform feedbacks within a five-day period will result in a lunchtime detention.
The great majority of our pupils wear their uniform correctly each day and arrive with the equipment they need. These small, everyday habits matter; they demonstrate readiness, personal responsibility and pride in belonging to our school community.
Thank you for your continued support in helping us maintain these shared expectations.
Pupil Attendance
We aspire to high levels of attendance for all pupils, recognising the important contribution that regular attendance makes not only to academic progress and achievement, but also to pupils’ wellbeing, sense of belonging and wider life chances.
Pupils are expected to attend School every day that it is open, except in a small number of circumstances where absence is unavoidable, such as when a pupil is too unwell to attend.
If your child is unable to attend School, please email absence@ as soon as possible on each day of absence, and before the start of the School day at 8.45am. If your child is delayed on their journey to School, please also notify absence@ so that we are aware and can monitor their safe arrival.
Requests for planned absence during term time should only be made in exceptional circumstances and should be sent to absence@ in advance for consideration by the Deputy Head Pastoral, and in consultation with the Head.
Harvest Donations
This year, we are proud to be supporting the Helston Foodbank this Harvest across both the Senior and Prep sites, helping local people in crisis.
We ask that you kindly bring donations into school from the 5th to the 9th of October.
Items needed for the foodbank (alongside other items including toiletries and nappies) are:
There are multiple drop-off points at the Senior School at the entrances to the Ode, The Chapel, The Burrel and the SBA. These points will be open every morning from 08.30am to 09.10am.
A huge thanks in advance for your support in this. We look forward to sharing news of our delivery to the Foodbank on the 13th of October.
Charity Day Friday 9th October
On Friday 9 October we will be holding our next Charity Day, and students will be able to wear home clothes to school by donating £2 for the two charities we have chosen to support this month.
This time we will be supporting the Methodist action charity, All We Can, to shelp them in their work with small-scale charities and communities around the world, and ShelterBox, an international aid charity.
We are also collecting donations for the Helston Foodbank and donations of non-perishable items are very welcome.
You can find out more about both the charities here: Donate food | Helston and Lizard Foodbank
All We Can | Christian Development and Emergency Relief Charity | UK
ShelterBox Emergency Disaster Relief
The Community Action Team is a student-led committee which researches different charities and votes on which ones the school will support each term.
As a rule, they tend not to choose the big charity days such as Children In Need or Sport Relief- although they are fantastic projects, we usually opt to support smaller local charities, charities which are particularly pertinent at a given time such as disaster appeals, or those where the majority of our donation goes to the cause rather than towards administrative costs. All our students then learn about the organisations we have chosen to support during a presentation in Chapel.
The donations will be added to school bills as we have switched to a cashless system at school.
We hope that you will be happy to donate towards the charities the CAT have chosen, but please feel free to opt out by contacting the Finance Office.
Best wishes
The Community Action Team
CEOP note: Omegle
We’ve been made aware that there have been links circulating around chats that expose young people to inappropriate content.
At present, a named platform is Omegle, which can expose pupils to unfiltered videos on YouTube.
We encourage you to be vigilant and get alongside your children this weekend in case they have seen these links circulating.
There is a wealth of guidance on the CEOP website which can support you in navigating these conversations at home: CEOP Safety Centre.
They also include steers for conversations through the #asktheawkward page: #AskTheAwkward – help to talk with your children about online relationships
Warm regards,
Mrs Felicity Thurlow

One-Way System on Site
Please could we kindly request that all parents follow the one-way system when exiting the school site in the mornings and evenings.
Vehicles travelling the wrong way past the Astro and the Ode create a significant safety risk, particularly at busy times when there are a large number of pupils and pedestrians on site.
Please ensure that you follow the designated route and do not travel against the one-way system, even if the route appears clear.
We appreciate your cooperation in helping us to keep everyone safe on the school site.
Kind regards,
Sarah Hollingworth
Operations Director

Co-Curricular Clubs: Frequently Asked Questions
Thank you to the many parents and pupils who have taken the time to share feedback and ask questions about our new co-curricular club registration process. We value these conversations and are grateful for the constructive comments we have received.
To help answer some of the most common questions, we have put together the Frequently Asked Questions below.
Our aim remains to provide a broad, inclusive and well-supported co-curricular programme that enables pupils to develop skills, confidence and friendships through sustained participation in activities they enjoy. We hope the information below provides further clarity and reassurance.
Coming Up: Two Exciting Events
We are delighted to share details of two exciting events taking place in The Ode this term, both of which promise to be memorable experiences for our school community.
The Ode Experience -Friday 9 October
The Ode Experience is a unique evening showcasing the extraordinary talents of our pupils, bringing together music, performance, creativity and innovation in an immersive celebration of life at Truro School.
This special event offers a wonderful opportunity to experience The Ode in a new way and enjoy an inspiring evening of student talent.

Jesus Christ Superstar: 18 – 21 November
We are also thrilled to present our senior school production of Jesus Christ Superstar this November. This iconic rock opera features some of the most recognisable musical theatre songs ever written and will showcase the remarkable talents of our cast, orchestra and backstage team.
Whether you are a long-time fan of the show or experiencing it for the first time, this promises to be a spectacular production.
Tickets are available from the Burrell Theatre box office > https://www.burrelltheatre.com/whats-on/
Parking Safety
As we settle into the new school year, we would like to remind everyone of safety around drop off, parking and Trennick Lane.
Please do not drop off or wait in Epworth Court. We are keen to support our local community and be good neighbours, so please use the Sir Ben Ainslie car park to drop off and collect pupils, rather than stopping or waiting in Epworth Court.
Please do not park, wait or drop off on the yellow hatched areas or double yellow lines in the Sir Ben Ainslie car park.
These areas are deliberately hatched to:
-Maintain visibility for vehicles travelling through the car park
-Provide a safer route for pupils walking through the car park
-Allow drivers pulling out of parking bays to see approaching vehicles, pedestrians and pupils
If you need to drop off, please turn right as you enter the car park and use the red areas indicated on the map (link below).
When in the car park, please follow the white arrows to support safe use of the car park. You may be asked to move your vehicle by a member of staff.
Please also avoid dropping off outside The Burrell and The Ode. This is a particularly busy area for pupils and vehicles, and stopping here increases congestion and the risk of restricted visibility.
Thank you for helping us keep the school site safe, reduce congestion and be considerate to our neighbours.
Thank you for your continued support.
