Sixth Form Scholars and Oxbridge Pathways

At Truro School Sixth, we are small enough to know every student and help them reach their full potential, and big enough to offer opportunities that inspire.

This week, Mr Kurgansky, our new Assistant Head (Director of Studies), joined the Sixth Form Scholars’ Club for a discussion on the impact of AI on modern life. The session built on the previous week’s exploration of the philosophy of thought through the statement “I think I think”, which prompted debate about the differences between human reasoning and computer-generated output.

Mr Kurgansky explained how AI works, along with its challenges and limitations, and asked our scholars to weigh the opportunities and risks it presents. Students were encouraged to think critically about the headlines surrounding artificial intelligence and consider how this fast-developing technology may shape their future studies, careers and society as a whole. The session sparked a lively debate in which students explored a range of perspectives and showed excellent critical thinking. We are grateful to Mr Kurgansky for sharing his expertise.

Sixth Form staff, students and their families also welcomed Mike Nicholson, Director of Admissions at the University of Cambridge, to the Burrell Theatre, where he spoke about the application process for Oxford and Cambridge Universities as a part of our Oxbridge Pathways Programme at Truro School.

He gave insight into what studying at those two universities involves, along with practical advice on how students can highlight their strengths and maximise their chances of success. A Q&A followed, in which students and parents asked about the admissions process, course choices and the wider student experience. The event was very well attended, and the feedback from students and parents was hugely positive.

Whether it is debating the future of AI with fellow scholars or hearing directly from a leading admissions director, our Sixth Formers are known as individuals and supported to aim high.

For any current Truro School pupils or students who have any questions about applying to Oxford, Cambridge or other highly competitive UK universities, please contact Mrs Srikanthan at [email protected].
