Sport and Outdoor Activity

Truro School Prep is blessed with outstanding sporting facilities, as well as a group of experienced and enthusiastic coaches, and takes great pride in offering a broad range of sporting opportunities for all pupils to try, regardless of their ability.

Participation and sportsmanship

At Truro School Prep we place an emphasis on participation and sportsmanship, with the ultimate aim of instilling in our pupils a healthy, life-long enjoyment of sport.

A comprehensive and competitive fixture list runs across all major sports and all year groups, all year round, providing opportunities at every level. Pupils of all ability are encouraged to participate and the high standard of coaching helps all pupils to reach their full potential.

Balanced sports curriculum

Each week we dedicate time within the curriculum on PE and games; from Reception to Year 2, the children have weekly lessons for PE and swimming and from Year 3 – Year 6 the children have three separate weekly lessons for PE, Games and Activities, combining diverse elements, such as outdoor and adventurous activities, such as kayaking, bushcraft and cycling with essential life skills, including first aid, swimming lifesaving, cookery and dance.

In addition, pupils are encouraged to join in with our extensive range of sporting clubs and activities outside of the curriculum.

Swimming

We make great use of the school’s heated indoor swimming pool and specialist swimming teachers, building on the early foundations to develop further the four main swimming strokes of front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke and butterfly. Our focus continues to be on the importance of balance, streamline, correct propulsion and breathing to produce smooth effective strokes that are sustainable over increasing distances. We have a range of certificates that may be achieved in our own bespoke swimming award scheme. In Years 5 and 6 swimming lessons take place in the larger Senior School pool, with the opportunity to achieve Personal Survival awards.

We offer six extra curricula swimming clubs, ranging from early morning advanced training sessions in the Senior School pool to lunchtime water polo games at Prep. We host inter school swimming fixtures with local schools and take teams to participate in the IAPS swimming championships at Millfield. Every pupil joins in our lively Inter House galas held in the Spring term.
