The Year 6 Diploma: Think, Create, Become

As pupils begin their final year at Truro School Prep, the Year 6 Diploma provides the opportunity to bring together the knowledge and skills they have developed throughout their time with us.

The Diploma spans academic study, creative expression, physical development and essential life skills. Pupils undertake independent projects, improve their presentation and communication skills, and engage in practical learning that prepares them for the demands of senior school and beyond.

At its heart is a focus on learning to know and the nurturing of metacognition, curiosity and a more involved understanding of subjects through independent enquiry. Alongside this, pupils develop learning to do through real-world application. For example, their Maths Diploma looks into the world of work, covering everything from employment pathways to salaries. The English section promotes public speaking and skilful debating. Practical life skills are also woven into the curriculum, with sessions on first aid and cookery included.

Equally important is the emphasis on learning to live together, fostered through collaboration, performance and shared experiences, and learning to be, as pupils reflect on their strengths and take more ownership of their personal learning journeys.

The Year 6 Diploma goes beyond a standard programme of study, providing pupils with the mindset, skills and self-confidence to thrive in the next stage of their education and beyond.

The Diploma reflects achievement in six broad areas of learning and experience:

  1. Core Academic Subjects (English, Maths, Science)

Award Assessment

These are assessed both through their everyday curriculum and in a series of specially organised activity days during their final year at the Prep school (Year 6), before they move on to the Truro School site. Each pupil’s achievements in the six areas are assessed and can, where above expectation, lead to the award of either a Merit or a Distinction.
