In Conversation with Former MP Mark Prisk

We recently welcomed Old Truronian and former Member of Parliament Mark Prisk CO80 back to Truro School for a wide-ranging discussion on politics, economics and the challenges facing society today.

Reflecting on his time at Truro School, Mark spoke about his enjoyment of the transition from O Levels to A Levels, where learning shifted from memorising facts to discussing ideas and developing critical thinking. He also recalled being part of the Truro School debating team that won a national competition in 1980, highlighting the importance of debate and communication skills throughout his career.

Drawing comparisons between the economic and political climate of the 1970s and the world today, Mark encouraged students to consider how history can help us better understand current events. He shared insights from his 19 years as an MP, discussing how politics has changed, the growing influence of artificial intelligence, and the importance of respecting differing opinions.

The session quickly became an engaging conversation, with students contributing thoughtful questions and perspectives. Topics included the role of government, the impact of social media, economic growth, entrepreneurship and the future of UK and international politics.

Mark spoke candidly about the realities of political decision-making, acknowledging that governments are often required to make difficult and sometimes unpopular choices. He stressed the importance of being open about the evidence and financial realities behind those decisions, while also encouraging greater support for innovation, enterprise and responsible risk-taking.

One of the strongest messages he shared was the importance of participation. Encouraging students not to remain on the sidelines, he spoke about the need for “good people on the pitch doing good things” and challenged them to play an active role in shaping the future.

The discussion, held in the School Chapel and facilitated by Rev Helen, provided an excellent opportunity for students to engage directly with someone who has experienced public life at the highest level.

Following Mark’s visit Head Boy Jackson commented on how he found the opportunity super valuable, ” It was extremely interesting to speak to Mark as he’s an ex-student of the school. His perspective of the world of politics and his life experience was all very enlightening. This was mainly emphasized by the fact that he was once sat in the same chapel at the same stages of life as us. Mark opened the conversation to us all and encouraged us in a world of social media to broaden our horizons and listen to as many voices as possible before we pick our own way.”
