Dear Parents, Guardians & Carers,
This is my first bulletin since joining Truro School, so I thought I would take the opportunity to introduce myself briefly.
My name is Ilia Kurgansky, and I am the new Director of Studies, taking over from Emma Ellison, who I know was greatly respected and valued by the school community. I am grateful for the thorough handover we worked on during August, and I wish her the very best in her future endeavours.
A short bio: I grew up in Kyrgyzstan and moved to the UK in time to sit my GCSEs and, later, A-levels. After my Master’s degree in Physics, I had the pleasure of teaching at Wellington College, where I set up the Computing department, and more recently at Rugby School, where my final position was Director of EdTech. In between, I squeezed in a few years of international teaching in South Korea and Denmark, with great stories to tell another day.
What stood out from day one is the welcoming and caring community, and not just towards me. I am deeply impressed by the attention teachers show in supporting our students. In the first four weeks of term, staff have sent me over 100 timetable queries. To me, that is a small snippet of dozens of one-to-one conversations with students and parents, tens of better decisions about GCSE choices, big handfuls of alternative provision for students who need extra support, plenty of choosing the best mix of courses for incoming pupils, and more than a few cases of staff stepping up to support colleagues in a time of need. All with a sprinkling of unavoidable clerical slips, which are thoroughly documented to address for next year.
Truro welcomed me as a warm, bustling School, and I am delighted to be joining the team in leading it.
I am also really looking forward to tonight’s launch of The Ode, our new music and cultural centre. It is a significant milestone for the school and a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the vision, hard work and generosity of so many people who helped bring this project to life.
The evening will see Truro School pupils performing alongside CMST musicians from schools and communities across Cornwall. I am particularly looking forward to hearing the reimagined version of the former school song by award-winning composer, sound designer and multisensory experience architect Tom Middleton (CO89).
I hope to meet some of you at the event.
With best wishes,
Mr Ilia Kurgansky
Assistant Head (Director of Studies)

Open Day Thank you
A huge thank you to everyone who helped make Saturday’s Open Morning such a success.
There was a brilliant buzz across the school, and it was fantastic to see everyone bringing the school to life and showcasing what makes Truro School so special.
To those of you who toured families around the school, chatted to them about school life and somehow always seemed to know exactly where you were going – thank you!
To Ben, George, Rosie, Tora and Tilly who spoke in the Chapel, you did a fantastic job of giving families a real sense of what it’s like to be part of our school.
We had some lovely feedback afterwards. Families commented on how confident, friendly and articulate you were, how well you answered their questions and how confidently you found your way around the school (especially those Year 7s who have only been here a few weeks!).
One parent said: ‘The pupils were just incredible – so confident and able to answer everything we asked.’
Another commented on how impressed they were by ‘how comfortable the pupils were and how naturally they spoke about the school.’
One mum was so blown away by the talks in the chapel she said, ‘I actually had a little cry at the idea of my son gaining that confidence as he grows up.’
Thank you for being such brilliant ambassadors for Truro School. You gave our visitors a genuine insight into what makes this place special, a really positive impression and, most importantly, you showed them the kind of young people our school helps pupils become.
You should be very proud of yourselves. Well done and thank you!
Pupil Attendance
We aspire to high levels of attendance for all pupils, recognising the important contribution that regular attendance makes not only to academic progress and achievement, but also to pupils’ wellbeing, sense of belonging and wider life chances.
Pupils are expected to attend School every day that it is open, except in a small number of circumstances where absence is unavoidable, such as when a pupil is too unwell to attend.
If your child is unable to attend School, please email absence@ as soon as possible on each day of absence, and before the start of the School day at 8.45am. If your child is delayed on their journey to School, please also notify absence@ so that we are aware and can monitor their safe arrival.
Requests for planned absence during term time should only be made in exceptional circumstances and should be sent to absence@ in advance for consideration by the Deputy Head Pastoral, and in consultation with the Head.
FTS Christmas Pudding Making at Prep
The Friends of Truro School are delighted to invite you to the annual Christmas Pudding Making Event, held at Truro School Prep on Friday, 20th November 2026.
Tickets go on sale on Friday 9th October, and we expect them to sell out quickly!
All ingredients and a glass of wine will be provided. Just bring a mixing bowl, a set of scales, a wooden spoon and an apron.
Uniform Expectations
Our uniform is an important part of our shared identity at Truro School. Wearing it well helps create a sense of belonging, equality and pride in our community, as well as ensuring pupils arrive each day ready for school. We would be grateful for your support in ensuring your child comes to school each day wearing the correct uniform.
Our full uniform requirements can be found here.
As the warmer weather comes to an end, we share the following information to support conversations at home about appropriate uniform. Pupils may wear a coat to school, but coats should not be worn in lessons, assemblies and Chapel or in the dining hall. A coat does not replace a blazer: pupils are expected to bring and wear their blazer each day, unless given permission by a member of staff to remove it. Hoodies and non-uniform jumpers are not permitted as alternatives to a coat or blazer.
We also ask pupils to arrive at the dining hall dressed in accordance with our uniform expectations. Where this is not the case, they will be asked to correct their uniform before joining the lunch queue, including retrieving their blazer if necessary. Staff may issue a uniform feedback where expectations are not met. Three uniform feedbacks within a five-day period will result in a lunchtime detention.
The great majority of our pupils wear their uniform correctly each day and arrive with the equipment they need. These small, everyday habits matter; they demonstrate readiness, personal responsibility and pride in belonging to our school community.
Thank you for your continued support in helping us maintain these shared expectations.
Parking Safety
As we settle into the new school year, we would like to remind everyone of safety around drop off, parking and Trennick Lane.
Please do not drop off or wait in Epworth Court. We are keen to support our local community and be good neighbours, so please use the Sir Ben Ainslie car park to drop off and collect pupils, rather than stopping or waiting in Epworth Court.
Please do not park, wait or drop off on the yellow hatched areas or double yellow lines in the Sir Ben Ainslie car park.
These areas are deliberately hatched to:
-Maintain visibility for vehicles travelling through the car park
-Provide a safer route for pupils walking through the car park
-Allow drivers pulling out of parking bays to see approaching vehicles, pedestrians and pupils
If you need to drop off, please turn right as you enter the car park and use the red areas indicated on the map (link below).
When in the car park, please follow the white arrows to support safe use of the car park. You may be asked to move your vehicle by a member of staff.
Please also avoid dropping off outside The Burrell and The Ode. This is a particularly busy area for pupils and vehicles, and stopping here increases congestion and the risk of restricted visibility.
Thank you for helping us keep the school site safe, reduce congestion and be considerate to our neighbours.
Thank you for your continued support.
