02.10.2026 Prep Bulletin

Dear Parents & Carers,

Dear all,

As we hurtle towards the half term break, I thought I would share with you some of the work we have been doing with the children to enhance and develop their understanding of care and kindness.

In the first instance, and on the topic of caring for ourselves, we spent some time looking at the importance of following a balanced diet. Pursuing the theme of ‘you are what you eat ’, we explored how our diet affects not only our fitness and energy levels, but also our concentration, ability to solve problems and our alertness. We explored the constituents of a healthy diet and learnt about the benefits of ‘eating a rainbow’. We also identified that healthy eating is not about being perfect, but about making sensible choices most of the time.

Continuing the theme of caring for ourselves, we returned to the idea of ‘taking time’ in our busy lives to ensure we appreciate what is going on around us.

We revisited the Old English verse entitled ‘Take Time’:

Take time to think: it is the source of power.
Take time to read; it is the foundation of wisdom.
Take time to play; it is the secret of staying young.
Take time to be aware; it is the opportunity to help others.
Take time to love and be loved; it is our greatest gift.
Take time to laugh; it is the music of the soul.
Take time to be friendly; it is the road to happiness.
Take time to dream; it is what the future is made of.

Moving away from self and to the wider world, we focused upon the countless benefits of spending time in nature, and particularly so in this beautiful county of Cornwall. We also underlined the importance of caring for the environment and, in particular, how we, as individuals, can make a positive impact on our countryside, beaches and coasts.

As I hope you are aware, we are no strangers to the notion of looking after the environment and, personally, I am a great believer in the importance and power of caring.

This is summed up perfectly in Nicolette Sowder’s poem:

May we raise children who love the unloved things-
the dandelion, the worms and spiderlings.
Children who sense the rose needs the thorn,
and run into rainswept days the same way they turn towards sun…

And when they’re grown, and someone has to speak for those who have no voice,
may they draw upon that wilder bond, those days of tending tender things,
and be the ones.

I write and speak often of the Truro School Prep community, and it gives me such pleasure to know that your lovely children are at the very heart of this very special family: Our future is in very safe hands.

I wish you all a wonderful weekend with your lovely children, and I hope you eat well, enjoy each other’s company, spend time outdoors, and find a little peace along the way.

With every good wish,
Rob

Harvest Festival

This year, we are proud to be supporting the Helston Foodbank this Harvest across both the Senior and Prep sites, helping local people in crisis.

We ask that you kindly bring donations into school from the 5th to the 9th of October.

Items needed for the foodbank (alongside other items including toiletries and nappies) are:

  • soup – tins and packets
  • long-life milk and fruit juice
  • small jars of coffee / tea
  • rice pudding and custard
  • cat and dog food

Items for the Prep and Pre-Prep can be taken into class with your children or dropped to the front office.

There are also multiple drop-off points at the Senior School at the entrances to the Ode, The Chapel, The Burrel and the SBA. These points will be open every morning from 08.30am to 09.10am.

A huge thanks in advance for your support in this. We look forward to sharing news of our delivery to the Foodbank on the 13th of October.

Autumn Flu Vaccinations (Reception – Year 6)

Each autumn, children from Reception to Year 6 are offered the opportunity to receive their flu vaccination right here at Truro School Prep, administered by the Kernow Health nursing team. The team will be visiting our Medical Care Room on Thursday 12th November.

For most children, this is a quick and painless nasal spray, though an injection option is available upon request.

What do you need to do?
Right now: No action is required.
Over the next couple of weeks, keep an eye out for a Kernow Health link in our upcoming Friday communications. You will need to complete this online form to give consent, opt out, or inform them if your child has already been vaccinated elsewhere.

Truro Prep House Music Competitions – Autumn Term 2026

We are delighted to announce the first of this year’s two House Music competitions. The Solo Performance Competition will open for entries from Monday 21st September.

This much-loved annual event continues to showcase the fantastic musical talents of our pupils and always provides a wonderful variety of performances.

How to Enter

  • Entries must be solo performances only.
  • Performances should be submitted as an audio recording with no spoken introduction, pupil name or title of the piece included in the recording.
  • The closing date for entries is Monday 5 October.

Please email recordings to Ms Renshaw at [email protected].

We are fortunate to have an excellent team of visiting music teachers who are often happy to help pupils make recordings at school. Families are equally welcome to record performances at home.

While an accompaniment is not required, it can enhance a performance. Accompaniments may be live or provided via a backing track.

Competition Final
Following the submission stage, pupils will select the finalists during House Assemblies. The final will take place on Friday 16 October at 2.15pm in the Assembly Hall, where a visiting adjudicator will judge the performances and award the results.

Parents and families of all finalists selected will be warmly invited to attend and support the pupils at the final.

House Singing Competition
Later in the term, we will also be welcoming back the ever-popular House Singing Competition. Staff will work with their Houses to prepare a festive performance of a popular Christmas song.

The competition final will be held in school for pupils only. However, families will have the opportunity to enjoy all four House performances at our Annual Christmas Concert on Monday 7 December at Truro Methodist Church.

Further details about this exciting event will be shared later in the term.
