Dear Parents & Carers,
Amidst the regular routine of lessons and activities, the children have revelled in the sunshine (and a little midweek rain) and the chance to play on the main field. Running parallel to this, we have taken part in the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge, the first tranche of Year 5 children completed their coast-to-coast cycle ride, the final group of Year 6 children travelled to Immersive First Aid for their first aid course, and it has been a pleasure to welcome so many visitors to school. These visits have included prospective families, and the parents of children in Year 2 and Year 6 for their year group-specific meetings in advance of their children’s transition from Pre-Prep to Prep and from Prep School to Senior School.
Looking outside of school, the briefest glimpse at the news reveals widespread unrest and unhappiness, as well as regular concerns and criticisms of the world’s politicians and leaders. This week, we looked back in time to a very different era and took the opportunity to look at the life of Sir Winston Churchill. As one would expect, we began by reflecting on the fact that a number of his actions, particularly when viewed through today’s lens, were extremely questionable and he was, without doubt, far from perfect. That said, he is often considered one of the greatest leaders of the 20th Century.
Whilst we spent a moment looking at his achievements as a leader, we focused primarily on his time at school. The children were interested to discover that the young Winston Churchill was far from successful at school, particularly in his early days. He was prone to ill health and had various speech impediments (including a lisp and a stammer), he was forgetful, disorganised and careless, and his academic record was patchy, to say the very least.

Furthermore, his various physical frailties made him an obvious target for bullies. His ill-health prevented him from taking part in games and physical activities, and his grasp of Latin was so poor that he was banished from the lessons. Instead, during these times, he read and worked on his English. And whilst he found this incredibly challenging, over time, he became a voracious reader.
In later life, he became famous for his ability to process vast quantities of text and quickly grasp its key points. Of course, he went on to become a politician, a writer and orator.
We took the opportunity to enjoy some of his quotes (ranging from the inspiring to the entertaining), but the focus of our assembly, and our week, has been the famous three-word speech that he purportedly gave as the guest speaker at a girls’ school speech day.
Having made his way to the podium, he repeated the phrase ‘Never give up’ three times before returning to his seat. We looked at how this simple phrase can help us when we find things challenging in the classroom, on the games field and throughout our lives in general. Tenacity, perseverance and courage have been our watchwords for the week and, we hope, will remain so throughout the term and into the future.
To conclude, I will defer again to Sir Winston and our Quote of the Week:
“Continuous effort – not strength or intelligence – is the key to unlocking our potential.”
I wish you all a lovely, long bank holiday weekend with your wonderful children, and I look forward to seeing you all again on Tuesday.
With every good wish,
Rob Morse
