20.06.2025 Prep Bulletin

Dear Parents & Carers,

With part two of the Prep School Sports Day taking place today, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your understanding when last Friday’s downpours forced us to postpone events.

Fortunately, the heavy showers cleared by midday on Saturday, and we enjoyed a superb FTS summer fête. There was a real sense of community, plenty of stalls and activities, and a very long queue for the opportunity to ‘soak the teacher’! My thanks to all who attended and, especially, to the FTS and everyone who worked behind the scenes to make it such an enjoyable event.

Here at school this week, Year 6 has been deep in rehearsals for next week’s production of The Lion King. We have also kept busy with cricket tournaments, a Science and MFL trip to the Senior School and Truro School Cookery, art workshops and preparations for the forthcoming summer concert, not to mention getting ready for the Year 4 camp taking place tonight.

As if that wasn’t enough, Mr Anderson Besant spoke to the children to update them on the exciting news from the Cathedral that the chorister programme is now open to all children. Information on this was sent to you last Friday and can be found here > https://www.truroschool.com/admissions/scholarships-and-bursaries/chorister-scholarships/

Please note that the deadline for applications is Wednesday, 25th June 2025.

Our theme for the week has been ‘making good choices’, with a particular focus on the final three weeks of term and the start of the new academic year in September. We often find that changes to routine (as often happens towards the end of term, or when starting in a new year group or at a new school) can cause a shift in one’s equilibrium and, with it, a change in behaviour.

At such times, it’s easy to be swept along by events and momentarily lose sight of the values that serve us so well during normal routines. Sometimes, we withdraw within ourselves; at other times, we may become more extroverted. As our behaviour changes, so too can our ability to make wise and considered choices.

I took the opportunity to remind the children of the importance of thinking before leaping into action, and of using their conscience to help judge whether a course of action is worth pursuing. I also reminded them that they have the most amazing support teams in place (both at home and at school) and they should not hesitate to use us.

We explored the choices we can make around our language, honesty, application in the classroom, relationships with family and friends, and kindness to others. We concluded by returning to the tried and tested adage: “We are free to make our choices, but not free from the consequences of those choices.”

That said, and with this being the real world, we will all make mistakes and choose unwisely at times. The key is that the children are learning and becoming better equipped to make more informed choices next time. I am pleased to report that the overwhelming majority of choices have been very good indeed. As noted by both the ISI and, more recently, the Methodist Independent Schools Trust, the children’s behaviour is highly positive, and they show genuine care and kindness towards each other. Our future is in safe hands!

I wish you all a weekend full of sunshine and happiness, and I look forward to seeing you again soon.

With every good wish,

Rob Morse
