Dear Parents & Carers,
After our first full week of school, there is plenty of good news to impart and, once again, I have been struck by the enthusiasm, energy and good nature of the children here at Truro School Prep. It is, as I have written before, an extraordinary place and a genuine community; by way of example, one need only look at the games that take place on the playground with boys and girls from Year 3 to Year 6 playing together and having fun.
That said, there is no doubt that this time of the year brings its own challenges in terms of children feeling tired as early (and darker) mornings and busy schedules become a reality. I have spoken to them throughout the week and explained that it is completely normal to feel overawed or overwhelmed at such times and that there are excellent support teams in place (both at home and school) to offer help whenever it is needed. It is also helpful to keep busy in such times, and there is no shortage of activities for the children to engage in and enjoy. For instance, the series of ‘year group walks’ is underway and, over the next few weeks, Year 6 will travel to St Agnes and Trevaunance Cove, Year 5 will take on Bodmin Moor and Years 4 and 3 will travel to St. Anthony in Roseland and Trelissick respectively. Back here at school, the rugby and hockey seasons are up and running, with the U10 rugby team travelling to Millfield tomorrow and the U10s and U11s welcoming Plymouth College for both hockey and rugby next Wednesday.

Whilst we often find ourselves in awe of the children’s ebullience, one of the less engaging aspects of their enthusiasm and excitement is the amount of chatter that the children manage to produce. This is welcomed at break times but rather less so in the classroom and, as such, our focus for the week has been on the topic of listening. We explored the fact that by listening (genuinely listening, not merely staring into space), we can be better friends, we can improve our learning, and we can also develop good manners by not talking over someone. We paid particular attention to the difference between hearing and listening. We also identified that the words silent and listen are spelt with the same letters – surely not a coincidence!
Looking ahead
Looking a little further down the line, individual school photos take place on the 22nd of September and both the European Day of Languages and the FTS Macmillan coffee morning on the 25th of September. A later addition to the calendar is that on the same day, 25th September, we will be supporting the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Charity with a non-school uniform day to raise funds for the RCH Children’s Cancer Unit Fund.
There is also the Senior School Open Morning on Saturday, 3rd of October to look forward to. Please see the information on both of these in the Notices section of this Bulletin for full details.

Our Senior School Open Morning on Saturday 3 October 2026 is a wonderful opportunity to explore the next stage of your child’s Truro School journey and discover all that Senior School life has to offer.
During the morning, you will have the opportunity to hear from our Head about life and learning at Truro School, explore our beautiful campus with one of our pupil tour guides, meet teachers and current pupils, visit academic departments and take part in a range of interactive activities, and discover the opportunities available both inside and outside the classroom.

It is also a great chance to see how we support pupils as they move from Prep School into Senior School, ensuring they feel confident, happy and ready to make the most of every opportunity.

Non-Uniform Day Friday 26th September
Dear Parents and Carers,
As part of our school’s commitment to supporting local charities and causes, we will be joining schools, nurseries and colleges across Cornwall in a collective fundraising initiative for the Children’s Cancer Unit Fund at Royal Cornwall Hospital.
This is a cause that is particularly close to all of our hearts, and we are proud to support the incredible work carried out by the Children’s Cancer Unit Fund.
As part of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we will be holding a Non-Uniform Day on Friday 25 September 2026 to help raise vital funds for children and families facing cancer treatment here in Cornwall. We suggest a donation of £1 per child.
Every year, children from across Cornwall spend days, weeks and sometimes months in hospital, away from their friends, schools and the comfort of home. The Children’s Cancer Unit Fund works tirelessly to provide support, comfort and special experiences for these young people and their families during some of the most challenging times of their lives.
Although this is our first year taking part, last year’s county-wide fundraising effort enabled the charity to provide:
VR headsets and music therapy
Family events and sibling support
Christmas assistance
Bereavement services
Essential items for families
Toys, games and activity resources for children
Deborah Charles, Play Specialist at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, explains:
“Your support truly makes a difference beyond treatment, helping create comfort, smiles and lasting memories for children and families facing cancer. Please support this year’s fundraiser to help us continue this vital work.”
Form teachers will be sharing the information with their tutees and encouraging them to take part.
Together, we can make a real difference to local children and families who need our support.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do contact your child’s form tutor or me. We are mindful that some of our pupils may have personal experiences of cancer through family or friends, and we will of course take a sensitive and supportive approach when discussing these issues.
