15.05.2026 Prep Bulletin

Dear Parents & Carers,

Whilst it is tempting to begin this communication with the customary review of the plethora of activities and events that have taken place over the past seven days, I am forced to break with tradition and to revisit an ongoing issue concerning those who drive their children to school.

We have been made aware of several near misses (in some cases, extremely close calls) where pedestrians and cyclists have been put at risk by parents who turn right off the A390 (Tresawls Road) onto the school drive. This is not only illegal but presents a clear danger to other road users. Only this morning, I was contacted by a neighbour who was nearly struck by a car that ‘turned right into the school drive’.

I wholeheartedly appreciate that traffic can be very congested, particularly around the Treliske Hospital roundabout, and that it can be very tempting to cut across the traffic to access the drive. I must, however, reiterate that we would much rather you arrive late to school than risk your own, your children’s, and other road users’ and pedestrians’ safety (or to receive a communication from the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary!).

Returning to normal routine, your children have surpassed themselves this week, and activities have included cricket at Plymouth College, cooking at the Senior School, class photos, the next tranche of Bake Off, Year 3 at Gwennap Pit, LAMDA exams and the National fencing Championships at Millfield School. Furthermore, we have hosted governors’ meetings, prospective parents, visiting pupils and, as you are aware, an Online Safety session for parents and the Year 4 Open Door ‘Book Look’.

Our theme for the week has been ‘the power of a growth mindset’. Following earlier assemblies on metacognition, resilience and tenacity, this week’s assembly focused on the word ‘yet’. We looked at the benefits of seeing challenges as opportunities for improvement, rather than barriers to progress, and that adding ‘yet’ can transform thinking and build confidence (I cannot do this…. yet).

Using Winston Churchill, Thomas Edison and JK Rowling as examples, we explored how perseverance and learning from setbacks can lead to success. Furthermore, we explored the fact that intelligence and ability can grow through effort and practice (much like strengthening muscles).

To conclude, we agreed that the true measure of success is not whether we are better than somebody else, but rather improving ourselves and being better than we were yesterday: a sentiment summed up perfectly by Ernest Hemingway:

“There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self”.

Turning to next week, and the run into the half-term break, we look forward to the Year 4 play ‘Pirates of the Curry Bean’, the opening of the annual Truro School Prep book fair, the Grandparents’ Tea Party and a host of trips and activities.

Furthermore, I hope that I will see many of you on Monday afternoon when we host Dan Simons, the Head of Truro School Prep elect.

In the meantime, I wish you and your lovely children a wonderful weekend.

With every good wish,

Rob Morse

Head of Prep

Pentominoes

HOW TO TAKE PART:
You can find the weekly Pentominoes challenge HERE every week in the Notices section of the Online School Bulletin.

To access the weekly challenge, you will need to click on the VIEW option below to bring up the weekly challenge.

These can then be printed at home and enjoyed. Please note that they need to be printed off as A3, 100% size (not fit to scale).

If you do not have an A3 printer at home, there are ready-printed copies in the Prep Reception Office that your children can collect on a Friday and bring home.

Finally, hints on how to solve the puzzle will be available each week. These will also be here in the Notices section should you get stuck!

Please take a photo of the completed challenge and email it to Miss Ryder at [email protected]
