24.04.2026 Prep Bulletin

Dear Parents & Carers,

It has been a pleasure to welcome your children back to school this week. Both new and existing children have settled quickly into the school routine, and they have worked hard and had plenty of fun along the way.

In addition to the normal lessons and activities, Miss Ryder and Rev Helen led the way on all things St. George related (on the 23rd April, of course), and Year 5 clearly enjoyed their action-packed three-day camp at Barton Hall in South Devon.

Back here at school, our assemblies have focused on the importance of welcoming our new pupils as well as reviewing the targets we set for ourselves at the beginning of the academic year in September. We also revisited the schoolwide focus on metacognition, ‘thinking about our thinking,’ and developing the critical thinking skills that will serve us well both now and in the future.

Finally, you will, I am sure, have heard or read the news that the government is moving towards a more formalised position on banning mobile phone use in schools. Here at Truro School Prep, we have always implemented a ‘no phones in school’ policy (with the exception of the very small number of children who have them while travelling on public transport to school – these are handed into the School Office upon arrival and collected at the end of the day).

As you may be aware, for almost two years, the Senior School have made use of Yondr pouches to ensure that phones are kept locked away throughout the school day. I take this opportunity to remind you that, contrary to what your children might tell you, there is no requirement for a child to have a phone at the Senior School. Understandably, some parents wish to maintain communication with the children on their journey to school and a dumb phone (sometimes referred to as a brick) more than fits the bill – and at a fraction of the cost.

Continuing on the topic of mobile phones and technology, I take this opportunity to share again with you some information I received during a Safeguarding training session. In spite of the move away from phones in schools, information from our Local Education Authority identified that online activities remain the main area of vulnerability for children and issues stemming from online activity (most often during evenings and over weekends/holidays) account for 60% of pastoral issues in schools (not to mention a perpetual source of conflict in many households).

With this in mind, I thought it pertinent to signpost you to some helpful information and advice on phones and devices. I am acutely aware that there is a good deal of support for the ‘Smart Phone Free Childhood’ movement at Smartphone Free Childhood, and equally, there are parents who feel that learning about such devices is an important part of a child’s educational experience. There is a great deal of advice available online; the NSPCC has a useful platform at Children and technology: Age-appropriate usage advice | NSPCC

If your children currently possess devices, or if you are thinking of providing one for them, the best advice I can offer remains that offered by the Head of Digital Strategy and Communications at a prestigious public school. He suggested that, if children have access to devices (such as games consoles, phones, computers, laptops or tablets), they should be used in a family setting, such as a downstairs shared room where people (and especially adults) are always or very often present. He was keen to underline the fact that the overwhelming majority of issues arise when children are unsupervised, and particularly when phones and such devices are permitted in children’s bedrooms.

As ever, please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of assistance in this or any other matter.

I wish you a very happy weekend with your lovely children. The forecasters suggest that the excellent weather is set to continue, and I hope that you all have a good deal of fun in the sunshine.

With every good wish,

Rob Morse

Grandparents' Afternoon 2026

Dear Families,

We are delighted to invite the grandparents of all pupils in Years 3 to 6 at Truro School Prep to our annual Grandparents’ Afternoon.

This special event will take place on Friday, 22nd May 2026, and is a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to share their school experience with loved ones.

The afternoon will begin with arrival at Truro School Prep from 1.30pm for a 1.45pm start, and will include a short welcome and musical performance, followed by time spent together enjoying a tour of the school and a traditional cream tea.

The event will conclude at 3.15pm.

Further details will be shared with those who register. Sign-up will be via online form HERE.

We kindly ask that this be completed by the 11th of May to allow us to finalise catering requirements.

We understand that not all pupils will have a grandparent who is able to attend this year. Please be assured that we will be mindful of this and ensure all children are well supported and will enjoy a fun, off-timetable afternoon of activities.

With every good wish,

Rob Morse

Head of Truro School Prep
