Dear Parents & Carers,
Swimming galas, football and rugby matches, cross-country events galore, trips out (Kresen Kernow), visits to the school (Cornish Metals), parent meetings, prospective parents, taster days, interviews and tonight’s FTS bingo, quiz and children’s film night – what a week!
As if that wasn’t enough, we were treated to two fantastic performances: the Prep School orchestra performing at the Truro School Gala concert in Truro Cathedral and Wednesday’s Year 3 production of ‘Ye-Ha’ by Craig Hawes.
Performing arts have most certainly taken centre stage (apologies, as always, for the pun), and we must not overlook the ongoing rehearsals for the Year 4 and Year 6 productions and the regular raft of musical lessons and ensembles. On a related theme, I take this opportunity to congratulate the probationers who were appointed as full choristers in the service at Truro Cathedral last Sunday.
The positive vibe that has pervaded the school (no doubt helped by the sunshine and proximity to the end of term) was reflected in our theme for the week. Stolen shamelessly from the excellent book ‘Factfulness’ by Hans Rosling (it is well worth a read if you haven’t come across it before), we identified that, despite the ceaseless tirade of negative news stories, things are, in many ways, actually much better than we think.

We explored measures such as the proportion of the world population living in extreme poverty, the use of ozone-depleting substances, oil spills, outcomes from natural disasters, and access to education around the world.
Having taken the time to explore such events and processes, we concluded that, first and foremost, we should take the time to appreciate how lucky we are to live in this time and place. Equally importantly, we must do our utmost for those who are less fortunate than ourselves – both on our doorstep and around the world. The world most definitely needs our care, and rather than stepping back and letting other people take the lead, we should do our very best to make a difference.
We reminded ourselves that such acts of service can take place on a very small and local scale, but that by working together, we can genuinely make a difference. I have no doubt that these amazing children will rise to the challenges that await them.
On the topic of rising (but in this case in a very different form), a reminder that the clocks go forward this weekend. I am sure that we will all appreciate the lighter evenings, but rising from our slumber on Monday morning might be a little more of a challenge!
Luckily, we have Book Week on the theme of Animal Magic to spur us into action. As ever, Miss Cad is at the helm, and I take this opportunity to thank her, all the staff, the FTS team and you all, as parents, in advance for all your help and support week in and week out. In the meantime, I wish you all a lovely weekend.
With every good wish,
Rob Morse
