Dear Parents, Guardians & Carers,

Wellbeing at the Heart of Our Community

This week, Team Wellbeing led a fantastic whole-school assembly focused on the importance of looking after our mental health and wellbeing. Led by Mel, our Wellbeing Lead, alongside Miss Holman, Head of PSHE, pupils were encouraged to think about how they can take care of their own mental health and support others around them.

Pupils from Years 7 and 8 confidently shared the NHS guidance on the Five Steps to Good Mental Wellbeing, while our Head Student Team spoke about the practical ways they look after their own wellbeing. It was inspiring to hear pupils speak so openly and positively about healthy habits, balance and self-care. A fitting prayer read by Issie and Izzy concluded a very thoughtful and supportive assembly. Thank you to all our pupils who took part in this assembly: you are role models to your peers.

Wellbeing has also been a key theme in Chapel this week, where pupils were introduced to Cornwall Mind, a local charity that helps people to improve their mental health and wellbeing. Today, pupils came to school in their home clothes to support this important charity. Compassion for others sits at the heart of our school community, and it has been wonderful to see such strong support for this important cause from pupils, staff and families.

Looking ahead, the Wellbeing Team has a range of activities planned for Children’s Mental Health Week (9-15 February). This year’s theme, ‘This Is My Place’, encourages young people to reflect on where they feel a sense of belonging. Pupils will be invited to share their own places of belonging, whether that is a club, a quiet space, or time spent with friends or family. At school, we foster belonging through our values, pupil voice, clear expectations and consistent support. A strong sense of belonging builds happiness, confidence and responsibility for ourselves and others. More information about Children’s Mental Health Week can be found here.

Mobile Phones and Wellbeing

We recognise that parents may choose for their child to have access to a mobile phone outside of school, but on the school site, mobile phones are not permitted before or during the school day. After school, pupils can check their phones in designated areas to support travel arrangements and communication home.

For most pupils, placing phones in Yondr during tutor time is simply part of their morning routine. This approach supports wellbeing by reducing distraction, encouraging face-to-face interaction, and helping pupils to focus fully on learning and relationships during the school day. It also plays an important role in safeguarding and helps to create a calm, inclusive environment where everyone can feel they belong.

As with any community, shared routines and expectations work best when everyone supports them. We are grateful to our parents and carers for reinforcing this message at home and for working in partnership with us when challenges arise.

As the school week draws to a close, this weekend brings much activity. Ten Tors training, sports fixtures, drama rehearsals and a cultural visit to Munich are just some of the exciting events taking place. I hope your weekend is a little more restful than night navigation on Bodmin Moor!

Have a lovely weekend.

Miss Emma Mitchell

Improvements to Our Emergency Communication

Thank you for the feedback following the recent severe weather disruption, including the thanks shared. We are grateful for your engagement and would like to outline the clear, practical steps we will be implementing as a result:

Emergency SMS – We will introduce SMS messaging for emergency situations such as school closures. Texts will be supported by detailed information via email.

Earlier and more decisive communication – Where there is a high likelihood of disruption (for example, red weather warnings or county-wide guidance), we will aim to make and share decisions earlier.

Clearer communication with pupils during the school day – Pupils will be informed calmly and clearly by staff before phones are unlocked, so they understand what is happening and what to expect.

Improved pupil release process – A revised pupil release form will be introduced to allow parents to submit information more easily and accurately.

Clearer messaging format – Emergency communications will use a short, Q&A-style format to make key information easier to find quickly.

The fast-moving nature of most emergency situations and the complexity of our two-site school model always requires some agility. We thank you for your understanding of that. In all circumstances, our priority will be the safety and wellbeing of pupils, supported by calm, clear and timely communication with families.

Thank you for your continued support and for working with us in the best interests of our pupils.

Reminder for Parents: The Wellbeing Hub

As part of our ongoing commitment to pupil mental health and wellbeing, Truro School continues to provide parents, carers and pupils with free access to The Wellbeing Hub – an expert-led resource supporting emotional wellbeing for children and young people, with dedicated content for parents.

The Wellbeing Hub is available to all pupils from Year 7 to Year 13, both in school and at home, and many pupils have already been introduced to the platform through PSHE lessons, with remaining sessions taking place during January.

Parents are warmly encouraged to explore the Hub themselves, and to guide their children towards resources they may find helpful.

*Register via the link in the Parent Portal*

We hope you continue to find The Wellbeing Hub a valuable source of support for your family and welcome your feedback.
