Dear Parents, Guardians & Carers,

In my Whole School Assembly this week, alongside the awards, commendations and notices of achievement, I shared some reflections about Georges Seurat’s painting of La Grand Jatte (image below).

Description of image

In the 1880s, when Seurat painted this Paris scene, he was fascinated by the scientific research of the time into colour relationships. From this, he developed a style of art where images were not created by the blending and mixing of colours on a palate, but by the carefully planned building of images on canvas from thousands of individually placed dots, or points, of paint – and so the artistic movement of ‘pointillism’ was born.

A planned and curated harmony of different individual colour dots, producing a beautiful wider picture. As I said to the children, our school is a community not a canvas, but the metaphor has power. Our harmony, our quality, and their potential, is a combination of all the smaller dots, not just the big ones. The thousands of choices made each and every day, however apparently small, are actually very important. Through those choices, actions and words, the pupils can add colour and harmony to the School, or, indeed, choose to take it away.

Overwhelmingly, most of them routinely do the former, of course. I have thanked them for this, and encouraged them to notice and value these ‘Seurat moments’.

In case they ask, I may also have referenced a film many of you will remember called Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, in which there is a scene at the Art Institute of Chicago, when the protagonists visit Seurat’s La Grand Jatte. I cannot recommend the decision-making of Ferris and his friends to truant from school (!) but they did go and seek inspiration from a fine painting that I hope has been used this week to make some useful points to support the children’s ownership of, and responsibility for, the day-to-day culture in our wonderful school.

My very best wishes for the weekend,

Mr Andy Johnson
