Dear Parents, Guardians & Carers,
One of Truro School’s greatest strengths is its vibrant community, which has been on full display this week as pupils and staff immerse themselves in a wonderfully busy period full of learning, activity, and connection. From adventurous fieldwork, to inspiring stage performances, brilliant sporting achievements, to our new student leadership team taking shape, every corner of school life has been alive with energy, purpose and participation. I’m proud to be a part of it.
Underpinned by our Methodist ethos, where all are welcome, our community celebrates inclusion and belonging. We are a diverse group of individuals, brought together by our shared values. Together we form a caring and supportive community, and following last weekend’s Royal Cornwall Show, it has been lovely to hear the stories of the broader Truro School community connecting and reconnecting – sharing what makes Truro School so special.
This has been a week packed with engaging learning experiences both in and out of the classroom. Our Year 7 pupils enjoyed a Biology and Geography field trip to Newquay, and our Lower Sixth Psychology students visited Newquay Zoo for observational research. This weekend, many of our Lower School pupils are embarking on an exciting French trip, while many of our Year 10 pupils are on Dartmoor completing their Silver D of E expedition. There have also been more Biology trips to Falmouth and Geology trips to Praa Sands.
Our boarders remain an important part of our school family – and continue to role model the importance of looking beyond ourselves as they prepare for the charity Rainbow Run, raising money for Children’s Hospice South West. Good luck to them all for what should be a fun and colourful experience, supporting a great cause.
Amongst the busyness of the school days, we also continue to encourage and support our Year 11 and Upper Sixth students who are quietly working through their important exam period. Remember, we are here if you need us and a long summer break is not far away now.
Our pupils are amazing, and it is a privilege to see their skills and talents grow. I also know this community is blessed to have a dedicated and caring staff body, so my thanks, as always, to them. Whether it’s in a lab, on the sports field, on a coach to a coastal cove, working backstage in the theatre, or supporting children from the front office, it is such a caring and dedicated team. The Truro School community is clearly a place where people come together to achieve remarkable things.
Finally, we are pleased to share the exciting news that, from September, for the first time in its history, Truro Cathedral’s 8-13 chorister programme will become mixed gender and children of all genders are invited to apply as part of an exciting additional round of recruitment for September 2025. We are fully supportive of this inclusive and forward-looking approach. If you would like to know more, or indeed, know anyone interested in applying for this out-of-cycle recruitment, please see the Cathedral news story below.
With best wishes for the weekend,
Mrs Rachel Henderson
HR Director

Mobile Phone Update
Following the introduction of Yondr, we’ve seen a positive impact on our school environment through pupils embracing our commitment to a phone-free learning space.
Break and lunchtimes are now filled with conversation, connection, and activity, whether it’s table tennis in the Quad, games on the fields, or participation in one of the many lunchtime clubs on offer.
It has been encouraging to see pupils engaging with each other more fully, without the distractions of mobile phones.
As part of our ongoing commitment to listening to pupil voice, the School Council recently raised feedback around consistency in how we apply consequences for mobile phone use. In response, we have reviewed and updated our Positive Behaviour and Values Policy to clarify expectations and ensure fairness in how we manage non-compliance.
The updated policy will take effect from Monday, 9 June. Tutors have already shared the change with pupils, highlighted in bold below, along with a reminder of our expectations for Yondr use.
Mobile phones must not be used during the school day unless permission is given by a member of staff.
This rule applies to all areas of the school site during the school day and before 08:45 and after 15:50 when a pupil is signed in to the library or attending a club.
Pupils should place their phone in their Yondr pouch during tutor time. If they forget their pouch, they must hand their phone in to the Front Office.
A Level 3 behaviour consequence (Friday detention) will be issued for non-compliance with these rules.
There are no changes for pupils who are exempt from Yondr, or for mobile phone protocols during off-site activities and WAA (Wednesday Afternoon Activities).
We are grateful for the support of our pupils, staff, and parents as we continue to foster a respectful and inclusive learning environment.
