12.12.2025 Senior Bulletin

Dear Parents, Guardians & Carers,

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas here in Truro School, with twinkling lights on Christmas trees, our school bell replaced with sleighbells, Christmas concerts, competitions, jumpers, fabulous owl-themed Christmas cards, a 10-foot high stable scene as you enter the chapel and a wonderful display by our boarders of all things Christmassey from around the world.

We are counting UP to Christmas day by day, with a giant Advent calendar in morning chapels, seeking some peace, joy, hope and (next week) love behind each door – albeit a week ahead of the rest of the world!

As Chaplain across both sites, I found myself beginning to step into Christmas around mid-November in the Prep, when Mary and Joseph set off towards Bethlehem. The Wise Men arrived about a week ago, and there were sheep and angels galore in this week’s delightful EYFS and KS1 Christmas plays. At the Senior School, our Artisan Charity Christmas Fayre brought joy and hope to the world, and even more joy will be raised with the Year 8 Charity Mince Pie Mile Run next week.

We’ve been blessed by many angelic voices and musicians from Prep and Senior pupils, who warmed our hearts with Christmas delights at Truro Methodist Church (TMC). Yes, it’s definitely beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

Christmas is the Christian Festival of Light, with other world faiths celebrating their festivals of light at different times of the year, all around the world. During this term, we’ve enjoyed learning about the light festivals of Diwali (Hindu), Hanukkah (Judaism) and Christmas (Christianity). More faith festivals are planned in our School Calendar for 2026. Festivals of Light are times to remember the goodness of light overcoming darkness and to give thanks for the light.

In the Christian narrative, a reading often treasured at this time of year is from John’s Gospel chapter 1, verse 5: ‘the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.’

Next Tuesday (16th), children across the whole school will be invited to step into the light, with the creation of Christingles by our Prep and Pre-Prep children, and our whole school Nine Lessons and Carols by Candlelight at the Cathedral at 7pm.

As our first term in this Year of Confidence draws towards a close, there will be many lights of many different ages taking part in this special Service of Light. The Light will indeed shine in the darkness through angelic music, word and song, along with a sprinkling of wonder, brought together ever-so-beautifully by this amazing community here at Truro School.

Christmas is a time of many different emotions: a time spent with loved ones and a time remembering those we treasure in our hearts; a time for enjoying the giving and receiving of gifts; a time for hope and a time for peace – for ourselves and for the world. Most of all, I believe it is a time to remember the Light that continues to shine in the darkness and, for those who wish, to perhaps take a peek into the stable and see the Love that awaits inside.

As it really is our children who make this season and this school so special, I’d like to hand over to them to have the final word here today. I leave you with a sample of the lyrics from our new Christmas Carol ‘At Christmas Time’, the words and music composed by two of our Year 7s, Zara and Lissie. This beautiful carol will have its world premiere on our last day of term at our Senior School TMC Christmas Carol Service.

The lyrics say it all:

‘At Christmas time, we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ
The stars are brightly shining to guide us through this night.
He taught us how to love God, he taught us how to pray,
And now we know that God loves us every single day.’

Blessings of peace, joy, hope and love be with you and all whom you love this Christmas time.

Warm regards,

Rev Helen

School Chaplain

Cash payments in Cafe and Tuck Shop

We are pleased to let you know that we will once again be accepting cash payments in the tuck shop and café. Card payments will continue to be the preferred payment method, but this change is intended to make the facilities more accessible for pupils and families.

As you may recall, we moved to a cashless system a few years ago due to Covid-related transmission concerns, safeguarding considerations around handling cash, and the cost efficiency of card transactions.

In light of feedback from pupils and parents, and with changes such as the introduction of Yondr pouches, some of the original reasons for operating a cashless system are no longer as relevant. The safeguarding of our pupils is still our priority, and we will monitor this change with pupils closely.

The café serves delicious homemade treats, as well as hot and cold drinks, and is open to pupils, parents and Sixth Form students throughout the week (opening times below).

Thank you for your support.

Uniform Message

Just a reminder that our uniform policy can be found on our website. Pupils are expected to arrive at school in the correct uniform, including appropriate footwear.

Blazers should be worn at all times, even under raincoats. If a pupil needs to remove their blazer, permission must be obtained from a member of staff.

Thank you for your support in ensuring our uniform standards are maintained.

Absence Reminder

A reminder that requests for absence for a planned appointment or event should be made as far in advance as possible in writing to the absence email: [email protected].

All requests will be considered by the Deputy Head (Pastoral), consulting, where necessary, with the Head. We do ask for as much notice as possible and supportive acceptance if, for any reason, we feel that permission should not be granted.

Pupils will only be granted leave to be absent from school in exceptional circumstances. Requests for absence for a holiday or recreational reasons are not considered to be exceptional circumstances.

Flu

The NHS has reported record-breaking demand due to flu outbreaks, raising concerns about potential disruption for patients in the lead-up to Christmas.

To help protect yourself and reduce pressure on health services, the NHS is encouraging everyone who is eligible to get their flu vaccination as soon as possible.

Kernow Health will be running flu clinics at various locations across Cornwall in early/mid-December, by appointment only. To book an appointment, please telphone 01872 221105 or email [email protected]. Please also see the poster below.

With Christmas just around the corner, if your child is experiencing flu symptoms, it’s best to keep them at home so they can rest and recover.

Lost Property - End of Term Reminder

Please note that all unclaimed lost property will be cleared at the end of term. We kindly ask that all items be collected before Wednesday 17 December.

During term time, items can be collected between 0800 – 1300 items from Lost Property Holding A (outside, front of SBA), or from the Lost Property Container (outside, left side of SBA) between 1315 – 1430.

Pupils will be notified if any named lost property has been found. Once notified, pupils are expected to collect their items within one week. Additionally, parents/carers will be emailed if there is named property awaiting collection.

If you have any questions, please contact: [email protected]. Thank you for your cooperation in helping us reunite lost items with their owners before the end of term.

Halal option for lunch

We have previously offered a Halal option for lunch, but due to lack of demand this was removed from the menu and additional vegetarian options made available.

We are considering reintroducing this option but would like to understand the demand. If you are interested in your child being able to select a Halal meal option for lunch, please could you email register your interest by emailing [email protected].
