Dear Parents, Guardians & Carers,
As we move into the final half term of the academic year, it has been a joy to witness the school buzzing with purposeful activity. Pupils have been fully immersed in learning, both in and beyond the classroom. Every corner of the school site is alive with energy, from focused revision sessions to fieldwork on the coast, rehearsals in the music rooms to hands-on science practicals on the grounds.
Our 2nd Year Geographers ventured out to Gwithian Towans this week to explore coastal processes through hands-on fieldwork. Pupils gathered data on wave activity, measured beach profiles, investigated longshore drift, and completed field sketches. The trip developed their practical data collection skills and enhanced their classroom learning with real-world experience.
Our 1st Year pupils have had a busy week, taking part in Autism Peer Awareness sessions, led by Cornwall Council’s Autism in Schools team. Each form group participated in interactive workshops combining role play, discussion, and visual learning. The sessions encouraged pupils to reflect on neurodiversity and how different people experience the world in unique ways, fostering greater empathy and understanding across the year group. On Thursday evening, our talented 1st Year pupils took centre stage at their Gala Concert at Truro Methodist Church. The concert featured an impressive range of choral and instrumental performances, showcasing enthusiasm and musical ability. Thank you to all who came to support the event.

This term, the Academic Scholars in Lower and Middle School have been involved in their end-of-year ‘Away Days’. These have provided them with opportunities to engage with ideas beyond the academic curriculum, as well as providing them with opportunities for collaboration. This week the Lower School Academic Scholars have been delivering their presentations to members of the Senior Leadership Team. These presentations have been inspired by their day at the Cornwall Museum and Art Gallery and their workshop with Head of Lower School, Mrs Thurlow. It has been wonderful watching them confidently share their independent research on topics as wide-ranging as Egyptian mummies to the Rosetta Stone.
On Wednesday, the Middle School Academic Scholars put their problem-solving skills to the test as we headed down to Engima Escape Rooms. Students worked collaboratively in teams to defuse a ‘bomb’ and crack the code to ‘join’ Bletchley Park. This was then followed by an inspiring session with Mr Picton, building upon the theme of collaboration and problem-solving by looking at the work of CERN. Our students then created their own cloud chambers using solid CO2 and were able to observe cosmic ray muons and neutrinos. Some even introduced radioactive materials into their cloud chambers to observe the effect.
Our 5th Year and Upper Sixth pupils continue to navigate their GCSE and A-Level examinations with focus and resilience. Across the school, pupils are working hard in preparation for their assessments, and we are proud of their efforts. Thank you to families for your ongoing support at this time.
We hope to see many of you at our Truro School stall (#422) at the Royal Cornwall Show over the weekend. Please do stop by and say hello, or join us for the drinks reception hosted by Andy Johnson and Rob Morse on Saturday, 7 June, from 1pm – 3pm. We always enjoy connecting with families and friends of the school in the wider community.
With warm regards,
Mrs Emma Ellison
Assistant Head (Director of Studies)

We are also thrilled to invite you to a drinks reception hosted by Andy Johnson and Rob Morse. The reception will take place at the Truro School Stand (422) on Saturday, 7 June, 1pm – 3pm. All parents and friends are welcome to join us for a glass of fizz and a friendly catch-up with our team.
We look forward to seeing you there!
Mobile Phone Update
Following the introduction of Yondr, we’ve seen a positive impact on our school environment through pupils embracing our commitment to a phone-free learning space.
Break and lunchtimes are now filled with conversation, connection, and activity, whether it’s table tennis in the Quad, games on the fields, or participation in one of the many lunchtime clubs on offer.
It has been encouraging to see pupils engaging with each other more fully, without the distractions of mobile phones.
As part of our ongoing commitment to listening to pupil voice, the School Council recently raised feedback around consistency in how we apply consequences for mobile phone use. In response, we have reviewed and updated our Positive Behaviour and Values Policy to clarify expectations and ensure fairness in how we manage non-compliance.
The updated policy will take effect from Monday, 9 June. Tutors have already shared the change with pupils, highlighted in bold below, along with a reminder of our expectations for Yondr use.
Mobile phones must not be used during the school day unless permission is given by a member of staff.
This rule applies to all areas of the school site during the school day and before 08:45 and after 15:50 when a pupil is signed in to the library or attending a club.
Pupils should place their phone in their Yondr pouch during tutor time. If they forget their pouch, they must hand their phone in to the Front Office.
A Level 3 behaviour consequence (Friday detention) will be issued for non-compliance with these rules.
There are no changes for pupils who are exempt from Yondr, or for mobile phone protocols during off-site activities and WAA (Wednesday Afternoon Activities).
We are grateful for the support of our pupils, staff, and parents as we continue to foster a respectful and inclusive learning environment.
