Dear Parents, Guardians & Carers,

What does effective learning really look like? It is rarely just about getting the right answer the first time. More often, it involves grappling with ideas, revisiting mistakes, and refining understanding through feedback and discussion. Creating classrooms where pupils feel confident to take these intellectual risks is an important part of our teaching and learning approach. This week, across the school, I have seen pupils doing exactly that in lessons, in extra-curricular activities, and in moments that might at first seem small but are full of learning potential.

Morning chapel this week provided rich opportunities for reflection and discussion as our pupils explored St David’s Day, St Piran’s Day, and St Nonna (David’s mother), linking the stories of these historic figures to the importance of giving, leadership, and showing kindness within their communities. This week we also marked International Women’s Day, focusing on its chosen theme of “give to gain”. Pupils were encouraged to reflect on how the courage, vision, and selflessness of both men and women from the past have shaped society, and to consider how they, too, can contribute to the greater good today. Also, celebrating the Hindu Holi festival offers a vibrant opportunity to reflect on joy and renewal for all. These experiences connect directly to our teaching and learning ethos, encouraging curiosity, confidence, personal reflection, and ethical thinking beyond the classroom.

Learning has continued in a wide range of settings this week. Year 12 geologists applied their knowledge on fieldwork, observing rock formations, testing theories, and thinking critically about evidence. Across the school, sports fixtures and cross-country finals showcased resilience, teamwork, and strategic thinking, providing rich opportunities for pupils to develop both character and practical skills. Experiences such as the Charity Show and Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Training Day further allowed pupils to explore leadership, collaboration, and problem-solving, reinforcing that learning is an active, lived process that shapes confidence and personal growth. These experiences also lay the foundation for lifelong learning, something I feel passionately is so important.

Parents’ Evening for Years 10, alongside the approaching Year 8 Options deadline, highlighted another essential element of learning: reflection and planning. Conversations between pupils, teachers, and parents help identify strengths, next steps, and aspirations, giving pupils the clarity and confidence to take ownership of their learning journey.

As the week draws to a close, it is encouraging to see pupils continuing to take risks, ask questions, and engage fully in their learning in lessons, in sport, and in the many events that make our school community so vibrant.

Thank you, as always, for the support you give at home, which helps pupils develop confidence, independence, and a love of learning.

My very best wishes for the weekend.

Miss Lucy Coleridge

Health Reminder - Vomiting & Diarrhoea

To help keep our school community healthy, we kindly remind parents to follow the NHS guidance (linked below) regarding sickness bugs.

If your child has experienced vomiting and/or diarrhoea, they should remain at home for 48 hours after the last episode before returning to school. This helps reduce the spread of infection and protects both pupils and staff.

Thank you for your continued support in keeping our school a healthy and happy place for everyone.
