Dear Parents, Guardians & Carers,

October is here, and with it, that sense of autumn settling in. This point in the year often feels like the moment when routines are established and the real depth of learning gains momentum. One of the things I’ve been reflecting on is how we help pupils gain perspective. It doesn’t come in a single lesson, but develops gradually through conversations and shared experiences. Effective teaching focuses on clear explanations, purposeful practice, and helping children build knowledge steadily over time. This approach gives pupils the clarity and confidence they need to succeed at every stage of their learning journey. It reflects the principle we call the ‘Brilliant Basics’ in school, where small, consistent actions add up to big success.

The richness of learning in school was evident this week. Our Year 9 geographers explored their subject in the field, while on the sports pitches, our pupils continue to impress with both skill and spirit. Netball, football, hockey, and golf fixtures all showcased excellent teamwork, with notable resilience from the Year 8 girls’ hockey team, who were down 3-0 but showed the resilience to end 4-4 during their Wednesday afternoon fixture.

The Outdoor Education department has also welcomed hundreds of pupils and students signing up for this year’s Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Pupils are now planning their skills, physical activities, and volunteering projects, where they will develop a rich mix of abilities and personal attributes.

In Chapel, eight pupils shared their language skills in celebration of European Day of Languages, speaking in Spanish, German, French, Ukrainian, and Cantonese. It was inspiring to hear them and reminded me of the vibrant and diverse community we are all part of.

We were also delighted this week to welcome many of you to our Sixth Form Year 13 Parent Drop-In and Year 10 Parent Meet and Greet, which highlighted the power of partnership between home and school. Thank you to everyone who made the time to join us.

As we look ahead to the weekend, we are excited to welcome families from across Cornwall and further afield to our Whole School Open Morning.

We are incredibly grateful to our staff, pupils, and student helpers whose hard work and energy make the event such a success. These occasions are always filled with pride, as our community comes together to showcase the opportunities and warmth of our School to others.

I hope you and your children have a wonderful weekend and find time to reflect on their learning this week, celebrating effort as much as achievement and reinforcing the value of steady progress.
