05.09.2025 Senior Bulletin

Dear Parents, Guardians & Carers,

What a wonderful week it has been. Your children have returned full of energy and ambition, mixed with the kinds of trepidation that we expect and are well placed to support at the start of a new academic year, and a new school for many. Some body clocks have had abrupt adjustment, and there are many tales of summer endeavour being exchanged too. This is what should be happening, and I am so pleased with what I see. Our School is full of life and learning again. I thank you for the encouragement you have given to your children, and all my colleagues who have worked tirelessly over the summer and in recent days to prepare for this vibrancy.

As well as the humans of all ages adapting to the new term, I am delighted that our migration to a new school management information system (iSAMS) has also happened. This system will help us all to improve what we deliver and how we communicate. Inevitable teething aside, this has also been a great start, and will become a great asset to us all.

In our start-of-term service yesterday, the Rev shared with the pupils that this year’s values theme is that of Confidence. We have focused on a different School value in each of the last four years (Curiosity, Compassion, Courage, and Creativity), and Confidence is our theme for this year. In her address, she emphasised that confidence is both about believing in what we do well and also being able to reflect on where we can learn and improve too. She also emphasised to the children that confidence is not innate, but can be grown or diminished for us all by experiences and reflection over time.

All of this, of course, emphasises the importance of a caring education, of the School experience, and of our partnership with you at home. In the year ahead, there will be a focus in School on Pupil Voice, so we can understand even better how the children experience their lives. This started at the end of last term with a pupil survey. We will also be looking at ways to continue improving communication with you at home, helped by iSAMS.

As I shared in the start of term letter on Tuesday, I am excited for the year ahead at a time when we should be confident about the strength of our School and its community in a wider educational climate where not all across the country can say the same. At the same time, it remains important as always to be looking to learn and to evolve, too, for the future.

For now, I hope your children have a super weekend at the end of a short but no doubt intense first week of term, and I look forward to seeing you at the many events, presentations, or occasions that will happen over the term and year ahead.

Yours sincerely,

Andy Johnson

Head of Truro School

Printmaking Workshops

Something Lost, Something Found is an exhibition by artist in residence Rachael Coward. It features sculpture, ceramics & prints inspired by exploring rural identity, memory, and the thresholds between loss and discovery. Rachael has been the school’s artist in residence whilst also working in the art department & teaching printmaking WAA. This exhibition is to showcase the work that she has been making during her residency.

The private view will take place on Friday 5th September 2025 from 4-7pm in the gallery, it would be great to see you there if you can pop by.

The exhibition then continues from Saturday 6th September –  Sunday 5th October 2025, open weekends from 10am-3pm.

Workshops

Rachael will also be running some workshops alongside the show that are open to all. It’s a great chance to step into the world of printmaking if you’ve never done it before!

🎨 Gelli Plate Printmaking – Saturday 13th September, 10am–1pm

In this session you will be introduced to gelli plate printmaking, a vibrant and modern take on mono-printing. During the workshop you will learn how to make your own expressive, layered artworks that can stand alone or be used for collage / mixed media works.   Rachael will show you how to make the most out of your gelli plate and introduce you to techniques that combine textures, stencils and found imagery with painting

🎨 Printmaking Without A Press – Saturday 27th September 10am-1pm

Taking inspiration from the Cornish landscape and found materials, you will explore a range of experimental printmaking techniques and learn how to create your own artworks without a printing press.  This workshop will give you the skills and confidence to make your own prints at home without expensive equipment or the use of chemicals.

£45 per person, all materials included & suitable for all abilities.
