23.01.2026 Prep Bulletin

Dear Parents & Carers,

Firstly, I must thank you all for your continued support and messages of condolence; you are all so very kind. Thank you also for your understanding and patience as we recover from Storm Goretti. We are not out of the woods yet (no pun intended), but we are certainly moving in the right direction. On this topic, please may I ask that you drive with particular care at present, and particularly so when parking, reversing, or pulling out of a parking space. The dark mornings and evenings, coupled with unusually poor weather, naturally impact visibility, and the children’s and your safety is paramount.

Despite the challenges from Storm Goretti and the unusual weather (especially the downpour on Tuesday morning), it has been a busy week here at school. Games and matches have taken place where weather and pitches have allowed, including the Under 10 and Under 11 netball teams, who thoroughly enjoyed their trip to Stover School on Wednesday.

We have had visits from governors and governors’ meetings and have welcomed a raft of prospective parents over the past few days. Once again, I have been impressed by the confidence of the children to welcome these visitors, to engage them in conversation and to make them feel welcome.

Wednesday saw five Truro School Prep teams performing their ‘Youth Speaks’ declarations. The format sees participants (in teams of three) select a topic that is important to them and present structured arguments and rebuttals before taking a question from the audience. There is no doubt that taking part builds self-confidence and develops public speaking skills, and there was no shortage of either on display. Thursday saw the winning team competing against schools from the Truro area and coming out victorious! We wish them every success as they move forward to the next round of the event.

Turning to Saturday, I am sure that you will join me in wishing all our Year 6 children every success as they tackle the Truro School entrance assessments.

Our theme for the week revisited one of my favourite lines: You are free to make your choices, but you are not free from the consequences of those choices, and, on this occasion, I linked it to a line from a prayer heard on the radio:

Guide us so that we may do nothing today that we will regret in the future.

We explored this through the prisms of lessons and learning, the use of IT and devices, and our lives in general.

This subsequently led to us agreeing that whilst we all have support teams (both at home and at school) that we can and must rely on, it is very much up to us, as individuals, as to the choices we make: whether we choose to do things today that will make us proud in the future, or whether our choices may lead to regret.

To continue the theme, I used the metaphor of us all being captains of our own ships, and the plotting of our journeys being very much in our own hands.

I must admit that I had planned to deliver this assembly and message earlier in the year, but, as you are aware, it has been an unusual start to the term in many ways. That said, it is still early enough to call this the beginning of a New Year. As such, it is a good time to think about all that this year will bring and about our journeys ahead.

To conclude, I shared with the children Alfred Lord Tennyson’s poem entitled This Year Is Yours:

God built and launched this year for you; Upon the bridge you stand; It’s your ship, aye, your own ship,… And you are in command.

Just what the twelve months’ trip will do Rests wholly, solely, friend, with you.

Your logbook kept from day to day My friend, what will it show? Have you on your appointed way Made progress, yes or no?

The log will tell, like guiding star, The sort of captain that you are.

For weal or woe this year is yours; Your ship is on life’s sea Your acts, as captain, must decide Whichever it shall be;

So now in starting on your trip, Ask God to help you sail your ship.

Your children are truly amazing young people (I know I don’t need to tell you that!), but, at this moment in time, I am, perhaps, a little more susceptible to their acts of kindness and to being moved by their determination to succeed and the high standards they have set for themselves and others. Whilst they remain in the very early stages of their own life’s journeys, it is abundantly clear that they are already learning the ropes and are developing a sense for navigating the right course. They are a credit to you all.

I wish you all a lovely weekend with your wonderful children.

Chorister Experience Day

Saturday 31 January is our annual Chorister Experience Day and Cushion Concert at Truro Cathedral.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a chorister in Truro Cathedral Choir?

If you have a girl or boy in Years 2, 3 or 4 who loves to sing, sign them up for the Chorister Experience Day to find out!

During the day, children will get to know the choristers and find out what they do, stand in the beautiful choir stalls, explore the crypt where they rehearse, try on a chorister’s cassock and surplice and hear the mighty cathedral organ being played close up.

Of course, they will also learn music and sing along with the choristers, culminating in performing in a concert along with them.

All girls and boys currently in Years 2, 3 and 4 are welcome. Please feel free to share the information with anyone outside of the school community.

RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch 2026

The Big Garden Birdwatch is the UK’s biggest citizen science wildlife survey and is the world’s largest garden wildlife survey.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of nature lovers like you take part, helping to build a picture of how garden birds and the species they rely on are faring.

The Big Garden Birdwatch is taking place on 23 – 25 January 2026. Why not invite friends over to watch what birds visit your bird feeder or garden in one hour?

Top tips for success include providing food, water and shelter in your patch. Making your garden wildlife-friendly and a little bit wild also helps.

You can register on the day and submit results digitally.

In school, we are getting ready for the Big Schools Birdwatch too, which takes place over the next few weeks. We have put up two feeders and are watching who comes to visit.
