Dear Parents & Carers,
A week of wonderful Cornish sunshine has accompanied the National Mental Health Awareness Week and our own ‘Truro School Prep Well-Being Week’. I truly believe that the warmth of the sun, the smell of cut grass and flowers and the sound of children laughing as they play is the ultimate tonic, and I sometimes wonder whether we would be better focusing upon well-being in the dark and wet winter months.
That said, we have spent the week learning about and revising strategies that will keep us in good mind for weeks, months and hopefully years to come. These have included community singing, breathing exercises, journaling, Pilates, art and exercise-based activities and a kindness challenge.
Whilst year group academic assessments have continued in the Prep School (an opportunity to implement some of our recently studied strategies for staying calm under pressure), we have managed to squeeze in class and whole school photos, MFL cooking activities, new pupils day, the U11A football team being crowned as county champions and, of course, Thursday’s joint production of the Year 4 plays, Richard III, Where’s my horse?’ and ‘The Battle of Hastings’. Not only were the productions brimming full of dramatic talent, teamwork, stagecraft and confidence, they also kept us laughing and smiling for well over an hour; entertainment and well-being all rolled into one!

Finally, as we approach the weekend, I share with you this lovely poem by Grace Noll Crowell entitled ‘I Have Found Such Joy’. We regularly remind the children of the importance of appreciating the world around us; our friendships, the opportunities that come our way and the everyday things that are so easily overlooked. They are summed up rather neatly in these three short verses and I hope that these words will bring you as much joy as they have to me.
I have found such joy in simple things;
— A plain, clean room, a nut-brown loaf of bread,
A cup of milk, a kettle as it sings,
— The shelter of a roof above my head,
And in a leaf-laced square along the floor,
Where yellow sunlight glimmers through a door.
I have found such joy in things that fill
— My quiet days: a curtain’s blowing grace,
A potted plant upon my window sill,
— A rose, fresh-cut and placed within a vase;
A table cleared, a lamp beside a chair,
And books I long have loved beside me there.
Oh, I have found such joys I wish I might
— Tell every woman who goes seeking far
For some elusive, feverish delight,
— That very close to home the great joys are:
The elemental things — old as the race,
Yet never, through the ages, commonplace.
I wish you a most enjoyable weekend with your lovely children and I hope that you find joy in ‘the simple things’ alongside a few moments of stillness in this increasingly hectic world.
With every good wish,
Rob Morse
