30.01.2026 Prep Bulletin

Dear Parents & Carers,

Firstly, thank you so much for your patience and understanding as we wade through the puddles and fight the gales. To make matters even more challenging, we have teams of builders, roofers and tree surgeons on site, and I am acutely aware that they take up valuable car parking spaces as well as covering the site in mud. They are, however, essential to our cleanup operation, and I take this opportunity to thank them for all that they continue to do for us, and for braving this truly extraordinary weather.

Here at school, as one would expect, activities have continued as planned and have included sports fixtures at Plymouth, a Year 3 Ancient Egypt workshop, Years 5 and 6 at the St Austell Table Tennis Club regional tournament and the usual raft of visits – this week from prospective parents and the Good Schools Guide to name but a few.

In spite of their energy and enthusiasm, it is clear that the children are a little weary of the dark mornings and evenings and the ceaseless rain. Half term is still too far away to get excited about, and we are all, perhaps, a little shorter of patience and a little quicker to become crotchety. As such, our assembly this week focused upon thinking before we speak and on how important it is to be able to forgive and to move on if things do not go quite as we had hoped.

As one would expect, we all agreed that we should try our best to make good choices and that, if we make poor choices, these present an opportunity to learn so that we can make better choices next time around. We also looked at how and why it is sometimes difficult to forgive and how we might overcome this.

Finally, we focused upon the importance of ‘moving on’ after any such upset and the benefits of concentrating upon the positive. To illustrate this, I asked the children to imagine that they each had £86,400 in their bank accounts (one can imagine how excited they were at this prospect) but that someone had managed to steal £10 from their account.

There was no way of tracing the individual responsible, no chance to get their money back, or indeed to find out why the £10 had been stolen.

I then posed the question: having lost £10, would anyone react by throwing all the rest of the money away? How many would take the remaining money out of the bank and rid themselves of it? The answer, of course, was none. Every single one agreed that they would not throw it away, but they would accept the situation and would be incredibly grateful that they still had £86,390.

The mathematicians amongst you will have already identified the reason for choosing 86,400 – namely, because this is how many seconds there are in 24 hours. All too often, we let our days be derailed by something that lasts for just 10 seconds, and we allow it to spoil the remaining 86,390 (or 23 hours 59 minutes and 50 seconds). Yes, we must deal with the situation; we must learn from it and must forgive whenever we can, but we must also move on so that we can make the most of our lives and enjoy each and every day.

I hope that you all enjoy a wonderful weekend with your lovely children, and I look forward to seeing you all again on Monday.

With every good wish,

Rob Morse

Maths Through Stories Competition

You will have been sent a letter home regarding the Maths Through Stories Competition.

The Young Mathematical Story Authors (YMSA) competition is the world’s first international maths storytelling competition for children aged 4–16.

Children from all over the world take part by creating picture books that include maths in a fun, meaningful way.

Miss Ryder will submit the stories, so if you choose to take part, this is your chance to aim high and challenge yourself!

Over the next few weeks, you may choose to plan, write and illustrate your very own original maths story to enter.

This challenge is optional and designed as an opportunity to stretch and challenge yourself, be creative, and show off your maths skills. It would be fantastic to be able to submit lots of stories as a school, but taking part is entirely your choice.

Extra support is available for anyone who would like help or guidance. This can be sought in Maths Club on a Tuesday or Friday (depending on year group).

For any further information, please contact Miss Ryder at [email protected]

A Message from the FTS

We have received this letter from Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) following our Santas on the Run event. Incredibly, we raised £3915.50.

The roof of Little Harbour Hospice was damaged in the storm, so hopefully this will go some way to helping them.

Thank you so much for working with the FTS team on our favourite event.
