19.09.2025 Prep Bulletin

Dear Parents & Carers,

Over the past two weeks, I have started each Bulletin message by focusing on the air of positivity that has pervaded the School. Now that the children are back into routine proper, the rain has set in, and any honeymoon period has worn off, I was altogether prepared for a dip in the levels of engagement; I could not have been more mistaken!

That said, we are acutely aware that this time of the year brings its own challenges in terms of children feeling tired as early (and darker) mornings and the regularity of busy schedules become a reality. We have taken the time to explain that it is completely normal to feel overawed or overwhelmed at such times, and there is a support team in place (both at home and school) to help as and when it is needed.

In terms of activities, the year group walks have continued to challenge and entertain (most recently Year 5 on Bodmin Moor), and the rugby and hockey seasons are up and running (the U11s enjoying a fruitful trip to Plymouth on Wednesday). As I write, the sound of tapping on my keyboard is accompanied by squeals of delight as the children enjoy their lunch break (in the rain!). There is an overwhelming feeling of positivity throughout the school, and as ever, I feel privileged to be a part of the Truro School community.

That said, one of the less appealing aspects of the wave of enthusiasm and excitement is the amount of chatter that the children produce. This is welcomed at break times but rather less so in the classroom, and as such, our focus for the week has been on the topic of listening. We explored the fact that by listening (genuinely listening, not merely staring into space), we can be better friends, we can improve our learning, and we can also develop good manners in not talking over someone.

This week’s quote of the week comes from the Dalai Lama and has often been repeated: “When you talk, you are only repeating what you already know. If you listen, you may learn something new”.

On a completely different tack, and following a couple of ‘near misses’ in recent weeks, please may I request your assistance in helping us to maintain the flow of traffic in a safe fashion during drop-off and pickup?

In the morning, if you wish to park your car, please do so in the spaces by the flagpole or in the marked bays on the centre of the roundabout (on the side nearest to the main field). Please do not park in the spaces on the left-hand or right-hand side of the roundabout, as this makes things difficult for those parents wishing to swing by and drop off their children next to the swimming pool.

In the afternoons, please feel free to use any car parking space, but where possible, please try to avoid parking on the drive (the main drive off the A390). If there is no other option and your stay will be brief, please park on the right-hand side of the drive and ensure that the left-hand side is kept completely free at all times – this is the only access for emergency vehicles and must be kept clear. Should you need to park for a longer period, please use the marked spaces within the school.

On a related topic, please may I ask that you consider both our children and neighbours when commuting to and from school, and in particular, to be aware that there is no right turn onto the main drive (when entering the school off the A390). I am well aware that Truro traffic can be challenging (never more so than earlier this week!), but we would rather you arrive safely and a little late than take any risks.

Finally, and turning to you as parents, carers and guardians, I am sorry to report that the autumn weather has put paid to our plans for the FTS late summer barbecue and picnic. We will look to rearrange for the summer term 2026.

Looking to next week, hope that we will see many of you at the Macmillan Cancer Research Coffee Morning, which will be held here at Treliske House (the main building in the Prep School) from 8.45am on Friday 26th September.

With every good wish,

Rob Morse

Maths Update; Pentominoes

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I am delighted to share with you an exciting new addition to our Weekly Bulletin, a Pentominoes Challenge that will appear every week for your child to enjoy and complete at home.

Every child at the school has been sent home with their own set of Pentominoes, a collection of twelve unique shapes, each made from five equal-sized squares connected edge to edge.

Each week’s activity will invite your child to arrange these pieces into a particular pattern or configuration, a puzzle that will challenge their thinking and encourage creative problem-solving.

While these puzzles are fun and accessible, they are also underpinned by solid educational value. Research has consistently shown that engaging in spatial tasks like Pentominoes enhances:

  • Spatial reasoning is foundational for success in mathematics, science, engineering, and even the arts.
  • Problem-solving and logical thinking, encouraging children to plan, trial strategies, and think critically.
  • Resilience, as puzzles often require multiple attempts and adjustments before reaching a solution.
  • Collaborative thinking, as these challenges can be explored in pairs or small groups, promotes discussion and shared reasoning.

We are also delighted to announce an incentive scheme to celebrate effort and perseverance:

Each child who completes the weekly puzzle and sends in a photo of their solution (emailed to [email protected]) will be awarded one puzzle point.

After every three puzzle points gained, children will receive a certificate in our celebration assemblies.

Every ten puzzle points, they will receive a small prize.

This is a fantastic opportunity for your child to be recognised for their curiosity, resilience, and mathematical thinking.

We strongly encourage other family members to join in too. These puzzles are designed to be enjoyed by ages 3 to 100, and make for excellent family challenges. Whether it’s an evening activity or a weekend brainteaser, the Pentominoes can bring people together in thoughtful, playful exploration.

If you would like additional sets for other family members, simply email me at [email protected] and I’ll be happy to arrange more.

HOW TO TAKE PART

You can find the weekly Pentominoes challenge HERE every week in the Notices section of the Online School Bulletin.

You will have been emailed the Bulletin on a Friday and it can also be found on the Truro School website at  https://www.truroschool.com/parents/weekly-bulletin/

To access the weekly challenge, you will need to click on the VIEW option below to bring up the weekly challenge.

These can then be printed at home and enjoyed. Please note that they need to be printed off as A3, 100% size (not fit to scale).

If you do not have an A3 printer at home, there are ready-printed copies in the Prep Reception Office that your children can collect on a Friday and bring home.

Finally, hints on how to solve the puzzle will be available each week. These will also be here in the Notices section should you get stuck!

We look forward to seeing the brilliant problem-solving happening in homes across our school community, and to celebrating your children’s achievements as we go.

With best wishes,
Cesca Ryder

Harvest Festival

We are delighted to announce we will be celebrating our Harvest later this half term, with Pre-Prep Harvest on Tuesday, 30th September and Prep Harvest on Thursday, 2nd October.

Each year, we encourage our pupils to bring in food and supplies for a foodbank in Cornwall, and this year we have chosen the Newquay Foodbank to support.

If you are interested in knowing more about their work, you can visit their website here.

The Foodbank has given us a list of items they particularly need at this time, so please give generously if you are able.

Bags/boxes of donations can be brought into school and stored in your child(ren)’s form room(s) and, for Pre-Prep, in Pre-Prep reception.

After the Harvest, we will take all donations to the Foodbank.

Here’s the list of suggested items (please note any food items should have a long life date on them please):

  • Nappies
  • Toiletries (for children and for adults)
  • Washing tablets for clothing
  • Food children like to eat, including sweets (must be sealed)
  • Pot Noodles
  • Tinned Items
  • Hats, gloves, socks – for the colder weather coming

Thank you in advance for your support and generosity,

Revd Helen Byrne, Chaplain

Senior School Open Day

Our Senior School Open Day will be taking place on Saturday, 4 October 2025, from 9.30am until 12.30pm.

Those in Years 5 and 6 have been sent separate correspondence for this, but everyone within the school community is welcome to attend.

The Open Day is a fantastic chance to find out more about life at Truro School. Alongside talks from Mr Johnson, Head of Truro School, families can tour the school with pupils, explore the classrooms and chat to parents and staff about the inspiring educational and co-curricular opportunities available at Truro School.

The Admissions Team will also be there to answer questions about the admissions process, requirements and induction steps.

For those wishing to attend, please complete the registration form that can be found here.

Please kindly share this invitation with our wider community for those also considering secondary school places at this time.
