23.05.2025 Prep Bulletin

Dear Parents & Carers,

As we approach the mid-term break, I would like to congratulate your children on a busy and successful first half of the term.

Tempting as it is to give you a lowdown of all that has occurred, I fear it would take you the full week of the half term holiday to get to the bottom of the list! By way of illustration, we experienced Year 3 on a trip to Gwennap Pit, the Year 4 and 6 teams at the Truro LTC tennis tournaments, rehearsals for the forthcoming production of ‘The Lion King’, another round of Bake-off at the Leith’s Cookery School, the ongoing programme of academic assessments and interviews for the new Head of Sport post… and all before lunch on Monday!

As we look to the second half of the term, I write with an update on the arrangements for the Truro School Prep Speech Day, which this year takes place on Thursday, 3rd July from 2pm to 4pm. Traditionally, this event has been open only to parents of children in Year 6 and a small number of prize-winners from Years 3 to 5.

I have always felt that this is a missed opportunity for us to gather together as a community, and I am aware, from several discussions and general feedback, that this view is shared amongst the majority of the parent body. I am, therefore, delighted to inform you that we will be able to welcome representatives from all Prep School families.

That is the good news, the less good news is that fire regulations mean that we will be severely limited in how far we can extend the invitation. As such, parents of our Year 6 leavers will be able to book up to 2 tickets. The rest of the Prep School can book one ticket per family. Once we have ascertained how many will be attending (booking details will be sent soon after half term), we will make any remaining tickets available to those who wish to bring more than their original allocation.

My apologies for the convoluted arrangements, but, having reviewed this on a number of occasions over the past six months, this is the only feasible plan (unless we build a bigger Sports Hall or can find someone to lend us a gigantic marquee!).

I should add that this year’s guest speaker will be Bella Collins. The Athlete Media Group describe Bella as follows: Without any previous experience in rowing or endurance events, Bella rowed across both the Atlantic and mid-Pacific Oceans, breaking three world records along the way. A true trailblazer, her expeditions have earned her global recognition on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list. With her spirit of adventure and unwillingness to let self-doubt hold her back, Bella has become a relatable role model for aspiring leaders and adventurers alike.

I do hope that we will see you (or at least some of you) on the 3rd of July.

Staff update

As you are aware from previous communications, we will say goodbye to Annette Martin and Josh Lord at the end of this term. Annette steps into retirement, and Josh takes up the post of Head of Rugby at West Buckland School in Devon. There will be a number of opportunities to say thank you and farewell to Josh and Annette during the second half of term – I know that they will be much missed.

Looking to the future, the following appointments have been made:

· Imogen Barnes: TA in Key Stage I (4th June start). Imogen returns to Truro School Pre-Prep (having worked in the Pre-Prep from 2019 to 2021) and holds an NCFE CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning.

· Claire Sortino: Learning Support (September start). Claire holds the National Award for SEN coordination, a Level VII Postgraduate Award of Proficiency in Assessment for Access Arrangements and a BA Hons (QTS) in Education. She joins us from Uptown International School, Dubai, where she held the post of Head of Primary and Early Years SENDCo.

· Andrew (Andy) Ward: Head of Sport (September start). Andy is a very capable and experienced practitioner, having held the posts of Director of Sport at Elstree School and Forres Sandle Manor School, and House Parent at Kingswood School. Andy is well known to us at Truro School Prep thanks to his work with the Cornish Cricket Company over the past two years.

· Further to this, Sally Luxton steps into the role of Head of Humanities, and she will also lead on the Year 5 Balerion award (a replacement for the John Muir award, which has ceased to function).

Finally, I wish you all a lovely half term break and I hope that the sun continues to shine.

With every good wish,

Rob Morse

Head of Prep

Truro School’s stand at this year’s Royal Cornwall Show will be #422; we would love to invite all families attending the Show to visit us there.

Throughout the Show, we will be ‘celebrating creativity’ and invite everyone to join us in a celebration of the creativity that has flowed through Prep to Sixth Form this year. Uniform Updates

With just over six weeks until the Summer Holidays, we are thinking about uniforms in the FTS.

Please put any outgrown uniform in a labelled bag over the coming weeks. You can leave this for us in reception, even if it is in need of repair.

There will be a uniform stall at the Summer Fete on June 14th, as well as at the Prep Coffee Morning on June 27th.

Please note that there is currently 20% off everything on the Monkhouse website with code SAVE20.
