16.01.2026 Prep Bulletin

Dear Parents & Carers,

I must begin this message by reiterating my thanks to everyone who has been so supportive in response to my mum’s passing away and to the devastation wrought by Storm Goretti. The assistance and kindness shown by your children, the staff and you as parents have been remarkable, and I consider myself very fortunate to be part of this lovely community.

On the topic of Storm Goretti, I take this opportunity to thank all who have volunteered to come in and assist with the clear-up. Whilst I would be delighted to take you all up on this offer, I am reliably informed by Truro School’s Chief Operating Officer that we already have a team of tree surgeons and groundsmen ready for action. That said, if further assistance would be helpful, he will let us know.

In terms of the damage to the classrooms, G2 is already back in use, and the roofing team will be on site next week to address the damage to G1. We will need a little ‘boxing and coxing’ in terms of storage for grounds and sports equipment, and how we make best use of the available space on the field.

Looking to the future, we have already started the process of investigating potential tree replacement and regeneration schemes, and I will meet with the team from Truro golf club later this week (as the damage and future solutions impact both the school and the golf club).

As ever, we will do our utmost to follow the advice we regularly give the children and will turn this problem into a challenge and the challenge into an opportunity. On this note, we would very much like to involve children and the Truro School community in the process of replanting, and I look forward to contacting you with further information in due course.

Turning to school-based affairs, I am delighted to inform you that all events have taken place as planned and it has been a pleasure to see the children enjoying their football and netball fixtures (albeit on adjusted pitches and against an unusual backdrop). We have also welcomed a large number of visitors (not just tree surgeons – governors, colleagues from other schools, prospective parents and pupils), and on Thursday, we witnessed the maths meeting for EYFS parents.

As for our message for the week, we spent some time looking at what it is to be a gentleman or a lady (or gentleperson, as they are now sometimes called). I very often refer to the children in this manner, and thought it pertinent to spend a little time exploring the topic. Whilst we looked at a raft of advice from 19th-century publications through to modern guidance from Debrett’s and Forbes, we agreed that it boiled down to having respect for oneself and for others. We drilled down a little further to cover the importance of good manners, common courtesies and using appropriate language before focusing upon the importance of doing things for others.
Of course, these things cost nothing but make a considerable difference to ourselves, to those around us and to our school and society in general.

Furthermore, we agreed that when we have a positive influence on those around us, we feel better ourselves, and by helping others, our own lives will be more enjoyable and successful.

I rather like this quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson, which sums up what it takes to be a lady or gentleman, and what it really means to succeed in life:

“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate the beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch Or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded!”

I wish you all a lovely weekend with your wonderful children.

Chorister Experience Day

Saturday 31 January is our annual Chorister Experience Day and Cushion Concert at Truro Cathedral.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a chorister in Truro Cathedral Choir?

If you have a girl or boy in Years 2, 3 or 4 who loves to sing, sign them up for the Chorister Experience Day to find out!

During the day, children will get to know the choristers and find out what they do, stand in the beautiful choir stalls, explore the crypt where they rehearse, try on a chorister’s cassock and surplice and hear the mighty cathedral organ being played close up.

Of course, they will also learn music and sing along with the choristers, culminating in performing in a concert along with them.

All girls and boys currently in Years 2, 3 and 4 are welcome. Please feel free to share the information with anyone outside of the school community.

For more information and to book a place, please email [email protected]

Chicken Pox

We have children currently staying at home recovering from chickenpox. Referring to Mr Morse’s letter at the start of term, I would like to stress the importance of keeping chickenpox (and any other infectious disease) out of school to protect those who are immuno-compromised/suppressed, and we would like to thank you for your consideration of this.

I would urge you to please keep checking your child/ren and, if you have any doubt, please speak to your GP before bringing them into school. Some children may just suddenly have a spot or two appear, others may have a fever, abdominal pains, sore throat, headache or a vague sick feeling a day or 2 before the actual rash appears. This NHS website provides lots of useful information: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/chickenpox/

Your child can return to school as soon as all of the spots have dried out and scabbed over, and they are feeling well.

You may have heard in the news this week that 1st January marked the start of a chickenpox vaccine being offered to young children as part of the NHS vaccination programme. It is called the MMRV vaccine and protects against measles, mumps, rubella and chickenpox (varicella). If you have little ones in your family who you would like to research this for, this link may be of interest to you: Chickenpox vaccine – NHS.

Best wishes
