09.01.2026 Prep Bulletin

Dear Parents & Carers,

A new term and a New Year, ice, snow (okay, just a little bit), torrential rain, gale force winds, storm Goretti, new children, new staff, Inset training, a full programme of lessons and activities from day one, New Year’s resolutions and the excitement of seeing friends: not a bad tally for the past five days!

I hope that you all stayed safe during Storm Goretti and that any property damage was minimal.

On this topic, I take this opportunity to thank you all for your help and understanding during yesterday’s early closure and today’s full closure. Please rest assured that our grounds team is working hard on the subsequent ‘clean up’, and we hope to return to our usual routines as swiftly as possible.

We will be sending an important communication shortly regarding Storm Goretti. Please do check your emails carefully for this message, as it contains key information.

Returning to the children during this first week of the new year, whilst the overriding theme has been one of excitement and enjoyment, we have also witnessed a considerable amount of hard work in the classrooms, from Nursery through to Year 6.

During both Prep and Pre-Prep start-of-term assemblies, we took time to revisit the words of John Wesley:

Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.

My challenge to each child (a New Year’s resolution if you like) is simply to ask themselves each morning: What good can I do today?

Naturally, the children (like many adults) questioned whether one individual’s act can really make a difference.

The answer, of course, is of course it can. Because each of us does all the good we can, we change not just our own lives, but the lives of those we live with. We change our school, we change our community, and we can change the world for the positive… One good choice at a time.

To underline this, I shared the starfish story with the Prep School children. I am sure that you all know this tale, adapted from The Star Thrower, by Loren Eiseley, but I hope you will not mind me sharing it with you here:

Once upon a time, there was an old man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing.

He had a habit of walking on the beach every morning before he began his work. Early one morning, he was walking along the shore after a big storm had passed and found the vast beach littered with starfish as far as the eye could see.

Off in the distance, the old man noticed a small boy approaching. As the boy walked, he paused every so often, and as he grew closer, the man could see that he was occasionally bending down to pick up an object and throw it into the sea. The boy came closer still, and the man called out, “Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?”

The young boy paused, looked up, and replied, “Throwing starfish into the ocean. The tide has washed them up onto the beach, and they can’t return to the sea by themselves,” the youth replied. “When the sun gets high, they will die, unless I throw them back into the water.”

The old man replied, “But there must be tens of thousands of starfish on this beach. I’m afraid you won’t really be able to make much of a difference.”

The boy bent down, picked up yet another starfish, and threw it as far as he could into the ocean. Then he turned, smiled, and said, “It made a difference to that one!”

Finally, having spent most of this week looking at the weather forecast for problems, I am pleased to inform you that the weather looks to be much improved over the weekend. I hope that you and your children manage to catch some sunshine in the days ahead.

With every good wish,

Rob Morse

Chorister Experience Day

Saturday 31 January is our annual Chorister Experience Day and Cushion Concert at Truro Cathedral.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a chorister in Truro Cathedral Choir?

If you have a girl or boy in Years 2, 3 or 4 who loves to sing, sign them up for the Chorister Experience Day to find out!

During the day, children will get to know the choristers and find out what they do, stand in the beautiful choir stalls, explore the crypt where they rehearse, try on a chorister’s cassock and surplice and hear the mighty cathedral organ being played close up.

Of course, they will also learn music and sing along with the choristers, culminating in performing in a concert along with them.

All girls and boys currently in Years 2, 3 and 4 are welcome. Please feel free to share the information with anyone outside of the school community.

For more information and to book a place, please email [email protected]

Flu Clinics

Flu continues to be an issue in our communities, compounded by this recent cold weather.

Kernow Health CIC will be running some Saturday drop-in clinics on 10th and 24th January and in early February, to give parents every opportunity to ensure their children are vaccinated as the flu season continues.

Please see the poster attached for information on the Truro drop-in session, or email [email protected] for further queries.
