Exploring English and Art in St Ives

Year 6 had an exciting day on Wednesday as they travelled down to St Ives for a day of English and Art. The trip, organised by Ms Cadwallader and Miss Ashdown, allowed the children to explore their imagination and understand how art and literature influence each other through the three activities.

The first group began touring around the Tate St Ives, taking inspiration from the artwork and exploring how artists move between landscape, figure drawing, still life and surrealism and use different styles, media and techniques.

Meanwhile, the second group explored the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Park. The children were given time to examine the texture and techniques she used to create her beautiful sculptures and explore the gardens and studios that inspired her works.

The third group headed to Porthmeor Beach, where they took inspiration from the sculptures to create their own artwork using the resources around them. They also sketched the land and seascapes, paying particular attention to the texture and detail.

The groups rotated these activities with lunch breaks and a run around on the beach in between. It was a beautiful day spent in the glorious Cornish sunshine. A huge thank you to all the staff who helped make it such a brilliant day!
