Life as a Sixth Form Scholar

With the deadline looming for those hoping to apply for the Sixth Form Diploma Scholarships (Friday 6 November 2026), what does life look like as a Scholar in Truro School Sixth Form?

Diploma Scholarships recognise pupils most likely to enrich the Sixth Form community through their knowledge, skills and interests, both academic and co-curricular, and in their commitment to the opportunities provided by the Diploma. Scholars are expected to be academically strong, but selection is not exclusively academic. The award is prestigious and includes fee remission of 5% to 10% for the duration of Sixth Form, as long as the student’s engagement remains positive and constructive.

Any Year 11 pupil at Truro School can apply, as can Year 11 pupils from other schools hoping to join for Sixth Form. Selection includes a written application, a review of the pupil’s school record and an interview with a pupil presentation.

Our Sixth Form Enrichment and Scholarship Co-ordinator, Mrs Srikanthan, has seen first-hand what the scholars bring to the Sixth Form. “Whenever I spend time with our Sixth Form Diploma Scholars, I come away feeling inspired by the curiosity, insight and enthusiasm they bring to every conversation, but also by the way they thoughtfully interact with one another and enrich each other’s learning,” she says.

She recently returned to her classroom to find the board covered in an elaborate collaborative diagram, complete with 3D sketches and comments in German, the result of just half an hour of discussion between the scholars. “It was a wonderful snapshot of the energy, creativity and intellectual engagement that characterise this group. It broke my heart to have to wipe it off!”

That culture of engagement was also clear on the Scholars’ Away Day to the Cornwall Museum in the spring, where each student chose an exhibit that resonated with them and presented their thoughts to the group. The discussion that followed saw students drawing connections across subjects and offering perspectives that prompted everyone to think a little differently.

“The Sixth Form Diploma Scholars truly represent the breadth, talent and richness of our Sixth Form community, and it is a pleasure to see them learn from one another and grow together,” adds Mrs Srikanthan.
