On Friday 16 October, Truro School welcomed back Old Truronians from the Classes of 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977 and 1978 to celebrate 50 years since they left.
The reunion was arranged in partnership with Steve Floyd and Steve Harrison from the Class of ‘76. With support from the Development and Alumni Relations team in contacting alumni, 48 guests came together for the evening, with partners, siblings, family and friends all joining the celebrations. Former teachers from the 1976 era who still live in the Truro area were also invited, adding to the sense of occasion.
Guests were welcome to arrive early for a tour of the School, including The Ode, our brand-new Music Centre. This gave many a chance to see how much the School has changed since their time here, and to spot the places that haven’t. A drinks reception in the Dining Hall followed, with the buzz of conversation building as old friends recognised one another across the room.
Dinner was served with a nod to the decade, with a 1970s-themed menu that included prawn cocktail, sherry trifle and Black Forest gateau among the choices. There was a bottle each of red and white wine on every table to keep conversation flowing, and Port and Cointreau were offered after dinner, courtesy of Steve Harrison and Steve Floyd.
Stories were swapped, names and faces matched up after half a century, and plenty of contact details exchanged so that the friendships begun, or revived, at the reunion can continue.
The celebrations didn’t end there. Two informal gatherings, organised separately by the two Steves, took place either side of the dinner: one in Truro on Thursday 15 October, and another in Perranporth on Saturday 17 October, giving guests more time to catch up.
Reflecting on the reunion once the dust had settled, Steve Harrison said: “The amount of positive feedback we have received has been incredible! There is a real desire from those who attended to keep contact, and we are exploring ways to best do that on an informal basis.”
Steve Floyd added: “Many thanks for all you did for the reunion. It looked like everybody enjoyed themselves.”
We would like to thank everyone who came, and especially Steve Harrison and Steve Floyd, whose enthusiasm and effort brought so many people back together. It was a wonderful way to mark 50 years, and we hope to see you all again soon.
