Pupils from Truro School have been exploring New York City on a school trip, taking in the sights, sounds and culture of one of the world’s most diverse cities.
Accompanied by Mrs Jobling, Miss Jeffries-Jones and Dr Pope, the group has followed a packed programme that mixes visiting famous landmarks with learning about the history and character behind them.
The itinerary took pupils across Manhattan and beyond, from Times Square to Fifth Avenue and Macy’s, with views of the Empire State Building and Trump Tower along the way. They walked the streets of Wall Street, admired the architecture of Grand Central Station, spent time in Central Park and saw the Brooklyn Bridge. They also made time to explore neighbourhoods including Greenwich Village, Little Italy and Canal Street.
The group also visited Hudson Yards, the High Line and Little Island, tried the food on offer at Chelsea Market and saw the skyline from the Hudson River.
At the Statue of Liberty, pupils learned about the history of immigration and the people who travelled to America in search of new opportunities, and the visit to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum gave them a moving chance to reflect on a significant moment in modern history and its lasting impact.
Pupils also learnt to navigate around a busy international city, sampled different foods and learned about the cultures that have shaped New York. The Broadway production of The Great Gatsby was a real highlight.
Mrs Jobling, Miss Jeffries-Jones and Dr Pope were extremely proud of the pupils, whose behaviour, attitude and enthusiasm were exemplary throughout. Their curiosity and consideration for others have been a credit to Truro School.
The trip is a great example of the co-curriculum in action, bringing history, geography and cultural understanding to life while helping pupils broaden their horizons, build independence and make lasting memories together.
