Prep Sports Round Up 06.11.26

Twenty keen, ready and able Truro School Prep rugby players enjoyed a hearty roast before getting on the ‘team coach’ and making their way from Cornwall to Mount Kelly for a keenly contested rugby fixture at Year 5 and Year 6 level.

The focus for the day was kept simple: look for space and pass the ball wide in attack and make our tackles low in defence.

From a Year 6 point of view, there were definitely moments of excellence in attack and defence. The ‘tackling machine’ Georgia K made her mark straight away, and the rest of the team followed with Edward S, Rafe G and Henry Chru following suit. In attack, the running prowess of Hugo V, James V and Sandy meant the team was always on the front foot and with Thomas’ and Percy’s ability to keep their width and pass the ball when necessary, the team scored plenty of scintillating tries. Our ultimate goal as the game progressed became trying to get every player to score at least one try, and we attempted this admirably, falling just two players short at the end. There has been so much progress from this group, and with another ten players left at school, the future certainly looks bright!

In the Year 5 game, the players again showed a fantastic attitude on the pitch, especially when it came to working as a team to pass the ball into wide spaces and keep the ball in play. With runners such as Zack P, Max B, Alex W and William J, Alfie H and Josh B-L, there was athleticism and penetration to our attack. With Theo H linking it all together with his passing, it meant that players like Finn J and Finn T were always in with a chance of receiving a pass when they were in space. Otto A led the way in defence with others following his lead. Again, the progress that these children – as well as the rugby players not selected for this match – have made has been fabulous.

Thanks to Mount Kelly for being wonderful hosts and to the parents who made the journey across the border into Devon to support!
