Truro Fencers Compete at National Championships

Eight Truro School fencers travelled to the David Ross Sports Village in Nottingham for the Cadet (U17) and Junior (U20) National Championships, with the girls’ squad competing in both events over the weekend.

Hannah (Year 11) arrived as a clear favourite for the U17 title, and handled the pressure with real professionalism and discipline, particularly through the pools. The event’s big surprise was the presence of two USA-based fencers, Tara Kaul and Alexandra Gay. Hannah beat Kaul in the semi-final but lost to Gay in the U17 final and the U20 quarter-final. Hannah took silver in the U17 and finished 5th in the U20.

Matilda (Year 10) turned in a solid performance, finishing 14th (U17) and 17th (U20), cementing her place on the GBR squad for future international events. For Amelia (Year 11) and Tara (Year 9), it was their first national championships at this age group. Both had a tough opening day but fenced markedly better on day two, with Pinkney finishing 31st and 25th, and Hayhoe 27th and 24th, across the two events.

In the boys’ competition, Finlay (Year 11) posted a personal best to finish 20th, earning his first national ranking points. Sarang (Year 12) went down by a single point to the eventual bronze medallist, finishing 25th, while Arthur (Year 11) fought well but was unlucky in some close early matches and finished 30th.

Henry (Year 13) faced one of the toughest pools of the weekend in the U20 boys’ event, including Billy Buxton, who recently finished 8th at the World Championships. Despite showing great resilience, on this occasion Henry didn’t progress beyond the pools, finishing 37th.
