Confidence Shines for Afternoon Activities

At Truro School Prep, we believe that some of the most powerful learning happens beyond the classroom walls. Our Afternoon Activities programme is a perfect example of this philosophy in action, offering pupils the chance to explore, experiment and grow through hands-on experiences that complement their academic learning.

Each week, pupils in Years 3 and 4 step off timetable on Monday afternoons, while Years 5 and 6 enjoy their activities on Thursdays. These dedicated sessions create space for curiosity to flourish and for children to engage with learning in exciting, practical ways.

This term’s programme is as varied as it is enriching. Pupils are developing vital life-saving knowledge through first aid, building independence and creativity in cookery, expressing themselves through dance, and embracing the freedom and responsibility of cycling. Survival skills encourage problem-solving and resilience, while jujitsu builds discipline, confidence and respect, both for oneself and for others.

Carefully designed to balance individual development with teamwork, the programme allows pupils to discover new talents, nurture existing interests and gain valuable life skills. Whether mastering a new recipe, learning how to respond in an emergency, or challenging themselves physically, every activity is an opportunity to grow.

As an independent school, Truro School Prep has the freedom to shape its own curriculum, and this flexibility brings real benefits to our pupils. In Upper Key Stage 2 in particular, where learning in many schools is increasingly dominated by preparation for SATs, our Afternoon Activities programme allows pupils to broaden their experiences, develop confidence and character, and continue to enjoy learning in its widest sense.

In our Year of Confidence, these afternoons are about far more than simply trying something new. They encourage leadership, resilience and personal challenge, helping pupils to step outside their comfort zones and believe in their abilities. Most importantly, they create memorable experiences that stay with children long after the session ends.
