Sports Round-Up 20.3.26

March has so far proved to be a busy and successful month of sport, with impressive performances across a wide range of activities.

Netball:
The U12 girls’ netball team qualified for the next round of competition, finishing an excellent third overall. The U16 team played a friendly match against Plymouth College and secured a strong 23–14 victory, with Evie N being named Player of the Match by the opposition.

Despite challenging conditions of rain, wind, hail, and occasional sunshine, the U13 team competed in their annual County Netball Tournament. The ten pupils represented the school superbly, winning all but their first group game against Penrice by a single goal. They continued their success in the second group after lunch, showing great determination even as the weather worsened. Thanks go to Miss Cobner and Miss Bickley for their support and coaching.

The U14 team also travelled to Plymouth College for a friendly fixture, where they played a closely contested match, with the first three quarters evenly matched. The team performed particularly well despite it being outside their main season. Amelia S and India T were both named Players of the Match by the opposition.

Pupils also enjoyed taking part in House matches with Year 7, making the most of some welcome sunshine.

Hockey:

Congratulations to the U13 girls’ hockey teams who played their hearts out at the Regional Finals to place an amazing 6th in the South West against the top teams in the region – well done!

Last week, the U12 and U13 boys’ hockey teams faced competitive fixtures away at Mount Kelly. The U12 boys continued their strong form with an undefeated run at the county tournament, finishing as runners-up. Best of luck to the U12s as they compete in the regional finals at Millfield. We’re excited to see how they perform against some of the top teams in the region! The 1st XI were also in action against Callywith College, continuing their competitive fixture programme this term.

Fencing:
Truro School fencers travelled to London this week to compete in the Public Schools’ Fencing Championships, held at the Lee Valley Athletics Centre. A huge well done to all the competitors who represented the school with determination across the three-day national event. Results to follow!

Tennis:
Last week, Millie N (Year 10) and Jacob C (Year 11) were both selected to represent Cornwall in the U18 County Cup. Millie travelled to Nottingham, while Jacob competed in Sunderland—an outstanding achievement, especially as both have several years remaining in this age group.

This week, Millie won a Grade 3 regional women’s tennis tournament in Bristol over the weekend. At just 14 years old and unseeded, Millie impressively defeated both the second and fourth seeds on her way to victory. Following this success, she has earned a place in a Grade 2 national-level tournament in Newport during the Easter holidays. Well done, Millie!

Cricket:
Over half term, four Truro School students travelled to Dubai and Sri Lanka as part of the Cornwall County cricket tour. Sam C, Theo M, and Eve N represented the county, gaining valuable experience in very different playing conditions, with the Sri Lankan heat and humidity proving particularly challenging.

Jack delivered an exceptional performance, scoring his first-ever century—115 not out from 62 balls in a T20 match. The U15 boys’ squad won seven of their eight games, narrowly losing just one by a single wicket.

Evie also enjoyed a highly successful first tour with the Cornwall U18 girls, achieving her highest batting score to date, hitting her first six, and maintaining consistent performances throughout. Her bowling was strong, and her fielding reliable. All Truro School pupils represented themselves and the school with great pride.

Huge congratulations to the Year 7 girls’ indoor cricket team for an outstanding day at the Cornwall Cricket Centre, where they triumphed to win the County Indoor Cricket Cup!

Cross Country:
Year 7 and 8 pupils represented the senior school at the Polwhele Cross Country, demonstrating excellent resilience and determination. The sunshine provided a fitting backdrop to the event. Special mention went to Lissie (Year 7) and Rosie (Year 8), who placed 4th and 5th respectively in the U13 girls’ race. Thanks were also extended to parents for their continued support.

Football:
The U15 girls’ football team secured a well-earned 2–1 victory against Pool School in a highly competitive match.

Wednesday saw some excellent performances on the pitches. The U15 side delivered a dominant victory over Richard Lander School, while the U14 team also impressed with a win against Newquay Tretherras.

The U12 squads fielded two teams at home against Newquay Tretherras. The development side showed significant progress, producing a fantastic performance against opponents they had previously struggled against. The second team overcame a slow start to produce a strong second-half display.

The 1st XI travelled to Cornwall College and produced a superb all-round performance. The U18 side controlled the game for long periods, demonstrating excellent passing and possession to secure a well-deserved result.

On Thursday, fixtures against Penair School brought further success. The U15 team earned a strong victory, while the U13 side produced a standout performance with an emphatic win. The U14 faced a tough opposition, and despite their efforts, were defeated.

Squash:
The KS3 squash team travelled to the East Gloucestershire Club for the semi-final of the National Schools Championships, facing strong opposition from Sir Thomas Rich’s School (Gloucester) and Tytherington School (near Manchester).

The matches were incredibly close, with each school winning one fixture 3–2. Many individual games were tightly contested, and only a few points separated first, second, and third place overall. Following a countback on games, Truro finished in second place, narrowly missing out on a spot in the National Schools Finals alongside the KS4 team.

Rugby Sevens:
The U13 squad represented the school at the County Sevens tournament, gaining valuable experience in a competitive festival environment.

International Women’s Day:
On March 8th, the school celebrated International Women’s Day, recognising the many talented sportswomen at Truro School who compete across a wide range of sports at school, club, county, and even international level.
