A Shining Light for Year 12 Physics

Year 12 Physics students from Truro School visited the Diamond Light Source in Oxfordshire, one of the UK’s leading scientific research facilities. The site is home to a half-mile-circumference synchrotron, a machine that accelerates particles to produce powerful X-rays used in advanced research across science and medicine.

During the visit, students took part in a high-quality outreach programme that built directly on their A-Level studies. They explored how the physics they learn in the classroom is applied in real-world research, gaining a clearer understanding of topics such as electromagnetism and particle acceleration.

A key part of the experience was meeting working scientists and seeing the technology in action. This helped students understand both the scale of modern scientific research and the range of careers linked to physics.

The trip reflects the strength of science at Truro School, where A-Level students are encouraged to engage with their subject beyond the classroom. For many, the visit was one of the most valuable parts of their studies so far, offering both insight and motivation as they continue their Physics course.
