Harvest Festival Collection for the Foodbank

Methodists are encouraged to ‘do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.’ As we continued to celebrate Harvest in Chapel Assemblies at the Senior School this week, this year’s Harvest collection for the Trussell Trust Helston and The Lizard Foodbank has been living proof of Truro School pupils living out their Methodist ethos in real and life-changing ways.

Our newly formed Charity Club (Years 7 to 10) met in early September with the Senior CAT Team (Years 11 to 13) to plan how we would collect food this year. They decided to make it a competition to encourage donations, and Mr Hooper, Head of Houses, rallied everyone in the houses to launch the first Charity House Challenge of the year, to see which house could bring in the most items, and which could bring in the most by weight. The results were remarkable, with 385kg (885 items) brought in by Senior pupils in just one week.

The Prep launched their new Year 6 Charities Committee in September, and they did a fantastic job, collecting nearly half a tonne of goods (432kg). Together, Prep and Senior pupils donated 817kg of items to Helston and The Lizard Foodbank, and the charities’ leads from both sites travelled over to deliver everything. This whole school initiative will feed approximately 90 people for a week this winter, and the nappies and toiletries donated will be very much appreciated too. It is by far the most we have collected in my time here.

Wickett are the winners of the House Challenge, both by number of items and by weight. Congratulations to everyone in Wickett!

I would like to thank everyone in our school community who supported the collections this year, whether as a Head of House, a member of one of our Charities Teams, by bringing in donations or by helping with the loading and unloading. Thank you to Mrs Cadwallader-Foley for overseeing the donations at the Prep, to Ms Kenwood and Ms Chanter for supporting the Senior Charities Teams, and to Ms Mayne for driving our Senior pupils and helping sort the donations by house. A huge thank you also to the caretakers across both sites, without whom none of the food would have got there.

Many lives will be made better because of your generosity. Please be very proud of yourselves, because your chaplain certainly is.

Rev Helen, School Chaplain
