Truro School Prep has been celebrating Harvest this week, and our School Chaplain, Rev Helen, shares the story of the celebrations below:
This week in Prep we have been celebrating a special Harvest of the Sea, a Cornish tradition marked in communities across the county to give thanks for the goodness we receive from over and under our seas.
In our Chapel Assemblies, Rev Helen arrived suitably ‘dressed’ as a claw-some Lobster to lead our Harvest Festival. We explored the riches that live in our oceans and the 85% of goods we receive that are carried across them, from food, clothes, cars and fuel to coffee.
We gave thanks for the marine biologists who work beneath the waves, for the fishermen and women who work on the sea in an industry Cornwall has respected for thousands of years, and for the RNLI and Royal Navy who help keep us safe. Together they represented our Harvest of the Sea.
In the Creation story we read, ‘And God saw that it was good’, and we said thank you in many ways for all the goodness in and from our oceans.
Harvest is also a time to remember those who have less than ourselves. As we are called to care for all people in all places, our amazing Year 6 Charity Team encouraged pupils from Nursery through to Year 6 to bring in food and supplies for the Helston and Lizard Trussell Trust Foodbank. Huge thanks to everyone who has given their time and resources to support people in need here in Cornwall; the collections will be delivered next week.
The last line of the Harvest hymn ‘For the Fruits of All Creation’ by Fred Pratt Green reads, ‘Most of all that love has found us, thanks be to God.’ Love has been on display throughout Truro School Prep this week, and we are very thankful for the generous hearts of all. God has certainly seen goodness here this week. Thank you all.
