Sports Round-Up 27.02.26

It has been an exceptionally busy and successful week of sport across the senior school campus, with pupils achieving fantastic results in a wide range of disciplines.

Tennis
Our 1st Boys’ Tennis Team faced Newquay Tretherras in a friendly fixture at the SBA as part of their preparations for the summer season. With home-court advantage, Truro led 3–1 after the singles matches, thanks to impressive wins from Jacob, Antonio and Jonny. Tretherras responded strongly, taking both doubles matches to level the tie. However, on countback, Truro secured the unofficial victory by the narrowest of margins, winning 29 games to 28.

Both teams benefited greatly from the experience, gaining valuable match practice on a fast-playing surface ahead of the competitive season, which begins after Easter. A big thank you to Mr Askey for organising the fixture and for his continued dedication in coaching and supporting the squad both in and out of school.

Fencing / Pentathlon
Huge congratulations to Daisy H, who was crowned U19 National Pentathlon Champion at the weekend. The title was decided across three competitions, with Daisy demonstrating outstanding consistency, determination and talent throughout. This is a tremendous achievement and thoroughly deserved — we are incredibly proud of her success.

Netball
The U13 netball team began the new half term with a friendly against Truro High School. Both sides played some excellent netball and worked tirelessly across all four quarters. Well done to Hetty and Harriet, who were named Players of the Match.

Our U18 team narrowly missed out in a thrilling National Cup quarter-final, losing 24–25 to Guildford High School. It has been a superb season for the team, who also reached the regional finals — a fantastic accomplishment.

On Wednesday, our Year Prep 6 netballers took a trip to the Senior School for a match against their Year 7 peers. It was a great opportunity for our oldest Prep pupils to experience what sport is like at the Senior School ahead of their transition in September. There was some excellent, competitive play and great camaraderie shown across the board, making it a valuable and enjoyable fixture for all involved.

Hockey
Congratulations to Summer R, who made her international debut for the England U16 team this half term. She played in two of the three matches in the Irish Series at Lilleshall National Sports Centre, with England winning two matches to Ireland’s one. Head of Hockey, Miss Cobner, described the achievement as “a huge moment” in Summer’s journey, praising her dedication and belief.

The Truro School U16 team travelled to Nottingham for the England Hockey National Schools Vase Finals, finishing an impressive 5th in the country after two wins and two losses. The team received tremendous support from the Cornish hockey community and travelling supporters. The girls played superbly throughout the tournament, showing both skill and sportsmanship.

Thank you to England Hockey for hosting such an inspiring event, and to the dedicated staff team — Mr Opie, Miss Cobner, Mrs Wyatt, Miss Harris and Mrs Newton — for making the trip possible. Mr Opie’s expert coaching continues to guide the squad from strength to strength. The final match against Dame Allan’s was a wonderful showcase of “hockey joy” and team spirit. The trip concluded with a visit to Nottingham University and a talk from Head of Hockey Matt Taylor.

Miss Cobner reflected: “Success in sport often comes down to the smallest margins. If we could relive the finals, I truly believe we had a team capable of winning. To finish 5th nationally is an incredible achievement, and we are immensely proud of both the quality of hockey played and the class shown throughout.”

Elsewhere, the U12 girls finished as county runners-up after a sudden-death penalty shootout in the final. The U14 boys also secured a strong second-place finish, while the U13 boys went unbeaten to claim the county title by a single point. All three teams now progress to the regional finals and we wish them all the best of luck.

Squash
Well done to the Key Stage 3 squash team, who competed against strong opposition from Cheltenham and Manchester in the semi-finals of the National Cup. It was a valuable learning experience for the players, who gave their all against tough competitors.

Huge congratulations to the Key Stage 4 team — James, Freddie, Buzz, Max and Antonio — who have reached the National Schools Finals, following in the footsteps of previous Truro teams. We wish them the very best of luck as they compete next week.

Football
Congratulations to Fenella on her selection for the County U16 squad — a fantastic achievement.

Finally, well done to the 184 pupils who represented the school in competitive fixtures last half term. Every pupil played with the spirit, commitment and sportsmanship we are proud to see, regardless of the result.

It has truly been a week to celebrate sporting excellence, dedication and teamwork across the school.
