Cornwall & Devon Core Maths Conference 2026

We were delighted to host a regional Core Maths Conference as part of the CODE MathsHub, bringing together students from Truro School, Treviglas Community College, Helston Community College and Callywith College for a day of collaboration, creativity and rich mathematical thinking. The event showcased the very best of Core Maths: practical, engaging and rooted firmly in real classroom experiences, with workshops designed and led by teachers from the four schools themselves.

The day featured a series of hands-on workshops that modelled how Core Maths can bring statistical ideas to life. In Paper Aeroplanes, participants explored comparing data sets, focusing on spread and interquartile range, while Beyoncé and a Chatbot used an accessible and playful context to investigate random sampling and bias. Perhaps the most hotly debated session, Could You Beat a Bear in a Fight?, demonstrated how Core Maths can blend critical thinking, modelling and statistics to interrogate bold claims and everyday assumptions.

The conference opened with a high-energy quiz delivered by Tom Rainbow, themed in the style of Richard Osman’s House of Games. Rounds such as Distinctly Average challenged participants to think carefully about averages, variability and data interpretation, while also developing Fermi estimation skills in a way that was both accessible and genuinely fun. Throughout the day, the emphasis was firmly on students collaborating together, talking about maths, and strengthening the regional Core Maths community. It was a powerful reminder that collaboration across schools is key to delivering an ambitious and engaging Core Maths curriculum for students.

A huge thank you to Mr Butterworth and the maths department for organising the event and to all the students and teachers for a wonderful day of Maths.
