Year 2 pupils enjoyed an exciting visit to Wheal Martyn China Clay Museaum as part of their science learning on materials, combining local history with practical investigation.
During the visit, the children explored the historic site to discover how china clay shaped mid-Cornwall’s landscape, economy and communities for over 250 years.
They learned how the clay was extracted, examined the tools and machinery used in the mining process, and how china clay features in everyday items such as toothpaste and bath products. Their curiosity shone through as they asked thoughtful questions throughout the tour.
The day also challenged pupils to become young scientists. In a practical workshop, they investigated different materials to determine which would be most suitable for miners’ socks, testing warmth, waterproofing and durability. This hands-on activity encouraged teamwork, problem-solving, and careful observation, and linked to their classroom learning.
The visit was a wonderful example of how Truro School Prep makes the most of its unique Cornish setting, bringing science, history and creativity together in a memorable learning experience. Thanks to our pupils, staff and the team at Wheal Martyn for such an enjoyable trip.
