From Cornwall to Morocco; Truro School Surf Trip 2025

During the first week of half term, 16 students travelled to Mirleft in Morocco for an unforgettable surf camp and cultural experience. The group included surfers of all abilities, from complete beginners to experienced wave riders, all of whom were expertly coached by Schools Out instructors.

The weather was ideal, with sunny skies and light winds creating perfect conditions for surfing. Pupils had the opportunity to experience a range of beaches, from beginner-friendly beach breaks to challenging point breaks for the more advanced surfers.

Away from the waves, students tested their bartering skills in a local market and the nearby town of Tiznit, allowing our French pupils to practise their speaking skills in real-life scenarios. The group also explored an old French fort to watch a stunning African sunset and visited the spectacular natural arch at Legzira Beach.

With fantastic accommodation, food and entertainment also on the menu, this was a truly amazing and memorable week for everyone involved.

The Morocco surf trip is just one of the incredible trips and expeditions offered at Truro School. At Truro School, learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door. From local adventures along Cornwall’s coast to international expeditions across Europe, the School’s rich programme of trips and outdoor learning experiences continues to offer pupils unforgettable opportunities to grow, discover, and thrive.

Outdoor Pursuits: Challenge, Adventure, and Teamwork

Our outdoor pursuits offering is an outstanding cornerstone of Truro School life, designed to nurture teamwork, leadership and resilience. Early experiences, such as the Year 7 team-building day, provide a fun and supportive introduction to adventure learning.

As pupils move up through the school, the challenges evolve to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) and Ten Tors Challenge, seeing pupils hiking the coast path or navigating Dartmoor. This year, we also celebrated our biggest Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award cohort to date, with eight incredible teams successfully completing their qualifying expedition in the breathtaking Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog) National Park.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Academic enrichment is at the heart of our trip offering, from fieldwork and museum visits to cultural and music tours that bring subjects to life. Whether performing on a choral tour, exploring historical landmarks, or studying the natural world first-hand, pupils gain new perspectives and a deeper understanding. This year’s foreign trip offering includes a Geology trip to Iceland, a French trip to Nice, a ski trip to Canada and a trip to Southeast Asia with Outdoor Pursuits.

For boarders, weekend and evening excursions provide further opportunities to explore Cornwall and beyond, from surfing and coastal walks to trips to local attractions, all of which encourage community and friendship within the boarding houses.

Building Confidence and Character

The impact of these experiences is profound. Pupils learn to take initiative, solve problems, and work as part of a team, often discovering strengths they didn’t know they had. As one member of the Outdoor Pursuits team explains, “We see students succeed and sometimes stumble, but every time they come away having grown in confidence and skill.”

These moments of challenge and reflection form an essential part of Truro School’s mission to educate the whole person, academically, socially, and emotionally. By embracing adventure, students not only see more of the world around them but also gain a clearer sense of who they are and what they can achieve.

A huge thanks to all of our amazing pupils and staff who made this surf trip to Morocco such a memorable experience for all. We look forward to sharing more news from our trips soon.
