Senior Sports Round-Up 17.10.25

The week before half term has been another busy and exciting week for sport across our community. From tennis and netball to fencing, golf, and rugby, our pupils have continued to demonstrate skill, determination, and teamwork. A huge thank you to all the staff, coaches, parents and pupils whose dedication and support make these achievements possible.

Tennis:

Truro School’s Boys’ Team faced a challenging away fixture at Exeter College in the first round of the LTA Year 11–13 National competition. Competing against higher-ranked and more experienced opponents, our team, Jacob, Noah B, Ben M, and Ben M, demonstrated resilience and determination throughout. Mr Askey, Head Tennis Coach, commented: “When faced with an uphill battle, the only thing you can ask is that our boys give total effort, total focus, and make their opponents work for every point. Our boys certainly did this. Jacob and Ben M had very close matches at numbers 1 and 2, Noah played some excellent tennis, and debutant Ben M was consistent and pushed his opponent all the way.” Thanks, as always, to Mrs Homer for managing the team and supporting with transport.

Netball:

The 1st Team (The Phoenixes) soared to a well-earned 30–19 victory in a high-energy match against Churston Ferrers this week. From the first whistle, the team brought intensity and focus, building a steady lead with strong attacking play and disciplined defence. Jasmine (C) and Tilly worked tirelessly in defence, forcing turnovers, while centre-court players Mabel, Ella, and Lydia linked defence and attack seamlessly. Our shooters, Elodie, Matilda, and Tansy, demonstrated great composure and accuracy under pressure. With a commanding 23–10 lead after the third quarter, the final quarter saw a full team effort, with Bethany C (WD) providing safe and strong options on the transverse line. A fantastic win for Truro’s 1st team and excellent preparation for next month’s county tournament.

Fencing:

Congratulations to Hannah H, who travelled to Istanbul this week to represent Great Britain in fencing. Meanwhile, Finlay T, Arthur P, and Sarah G represented Truro School at the Cornish School Foil, showcasing talent and determination. Congratulations to all involved.

Golf:

Golf continues to thrive at Truro School, with more pupils than ever taking up the sport and achieving impressive results. Leading the charge are Harrison, Ollie, Hunter, and Freddie, all playing off single-figure handicaps, with Harrison becoming Cornwall’s U16 Champion over the summer. Close behind, Jonny, Felix, Arthur, James, Sam, Nathaniel, and Archie are making great strides, demonstrating commitment and enthusiasm that are helping to build a vibrant golfing culture. Fixtures this term against Kings Taunton, Shebbear, and Clifton College on courses including Teignmouth and Bude have challenged the players, alongside the annual Truro School Golf Day, which brings together current and former pupils, parents, and staff.

Rugby:

Our Year 8 rugby team travelled to Penrice Academy for the Year 8 County Festival on Tuesday, competing with pride against schools from across the county. It was a successful and enjoyable afternoon for all involved – thank you to Penrice Academy for hosting.

The 1st XV (The Falcons) also played a thrilling match against Mount Kelly, emerging victorious 16–13 in a competitive and fair contest. The team now looks forward to the next round of the National Cup with confidence and excitement.

Another fantastic week of sport at Truro School. Well done to all our pupils for their achievements, and thanks once again to the staff whose guidance, encouragement, and hard work make these experiences possible.
