Year 8 English Trip: RSC First Encounters

Our Year 8 pupils enjoyed a memorable visit to the Hall for Cornwall to see the Royal Shakespeare Company’s First Encounters production of King Lear.

The play tells the story of an ageing king who decides to divide his kingdom between his three daughters, based on how much they say they love him. Lear quickly discovers that his vanity has devastating consequences as he is left at the mercy of his eldest daughters, whose betrayal leads to tragedy for both family and nation.

The RSC’s First Encounters productions are specially designed to bring Shakespeare’s work to life for younger audiences, using accessible storytelling, interaction and clear language, while staying true to Shakespeare’s themes of power, loyalty, and betrayal.

We were incredibly proud of our Year 8 pupils, who represented Truro School brilliantly with their excellent behaviour and enthusiasm throughout the trip. Opportunities like this are vital in bridging the gap between classroom study and live performance, inspiring pupils to connect more deeply with literature and the world of theatre.
