Year 7 Creativity Inspired by a Parliament of Owls

Year 7 pupils celebrated the publication of a very special anthology during their year group assembly, marking the culmination of a memorable cross-curricular project led by the Art and English departments.

The beautifully produced anthology features a collection of original owl-inspired poetry and artwork created by pupils following a unique visit from a parliament of owls in the school chapel earlier this year.

Working alongside experts from the Screech Owl Sanctuary and acclaimed poet and illustrator Catherine Hyde, pupils had the rare opportunity to observe and sketch an Indian Scops Owl, a Barn Owl and a Tawny Owl while learning fascinating facts about the birds’ habitats, adaptations and conservation.

Inspired by the experience, pupils combined thoughtful creative writing with imaginative artwork to produce their own illustrated owl poems.

A message printed inside the anthology captures the spirit of the day:

“It was such a pleasure to come and speak to the Year 7s about Darkling. Having the opportunity to draw the owls was a real privilege – I felt so lucky to spend time sitting near these beautiful birds! It was a wonderful day, and such a joy to work with such talented young artists and writers. Thank you to the pupils, Truro School, and the Screech Owl Sanctuary for making it so special.”

A huge thank you to the Art and English departments for bringing creativity to life.
