Year 4 Tremor-endous Learning

Our Year 4 children have been learning about volcanoes and earthquakes this term. As a part of this topic, they have been investigating what it might be like to live in an area prone to these natural disasters and the need for ‘drop, cover, hold’ drills.

Our pupils were then tasked with making an earthquake-proof building out of spaghetti and marshmallows. With Mrs Ellis providing the ‘quakes’ to test the strength of their constructions, the children then worked collaboratively on how to strengthen the building, considering the shape, base, cross-bracing and materials.

The year group will now progress to looking at some real earthquake-proof buildings and the systems they use to protect their residents, before our exciting annual visit from volcanologist, Dr James Hickey next week.
