At Truro School, pupil-led learning and personal development sit at the heart of the Middle Years experience, brought to life brilliantly in the Year 7 Wellbeing Fair, held in the Sir Ben Ainslie Centre (SBA).
The event was entirely planned and delivered by Year 10 pupils as part of their Middle Years Portfolio (MiY Portfolio), an innovative programme designed to develop key literacies including digital, social, cognitive, wellbeing and vision. Year 10 pupils dedicate time to exploring real-world life skills through collaborative projects, and the Wellbeing Fair provided a powerful opportunity to apply these in a meaningful and engaging way.
Designed with Year 7 pupils in mind, the afternoon focused on promoting positive wellbeing through a range of interactive and informative activities that highlighted key aspects of good health, including physical activity, nutrition, mindfulness and sleep.
Activities included an obstacle course and a football skills challenge, alongside a smoothie-making station and a “guess the sugar content” game, helping pupils better understand nutrition in a fun and accessible way. A dedicated wellbeing space offered quieter, creative opportunities such as mindfulness colouring, rock painting and Pictionary, ensuring there was something for everyone.
It was fantastic to see Year 10 pupils take ownership of the event, demonstrating impressive skills in research, organisation, teamwork and communication. Equally, their ability to engage, support and respond to the needs of the younger pupils was a testament to the confidence and maturity fostered through the Middle Years programme.
The Wellbeing Fair exemplifies the ethos of the MiY Portfolio, which recognises that education extends beyond academic knowledge. By embedding essential skills and values, and encouraging pupils to reflect on their own development, Truro School empowers each individual to discover their strengths, pursue their interests and prepare for future pathways.
The afternoon was a resounding success, benefiting both the Year 7 pupils who took part and the Year 10 pupils who led with such enthusiasm and care.
