With a successful Year 4 swimming gala and cross country galore, there has been plenty of sporting action over the week at Truro School Prep.
The week began with a triumphant performance from some of our pupils at the 2026 Cornish Frostbite Championships, held on Saturday 21st March, at Penzance Pool. The Nipper Stillwater Championships are a vital part of the SLSGB season, testing pool-based lifesaving techniques ahead of the summer beach competitions.
This popular event attracts clubs from across Cornwall, with eight pupils from Truro Prep delivering courageous performances across a range of events. These included three individual races, the Flipper Race, Board Race, and Manikin Tow, followed by two paired events, the Tube Rescue and Board Rescue. The competition concluded with two four-person relays: the Board Relay and the Medley Relay.
Well done to all those children that took part including, Evie S, Reuben F, Mila M, who won 2 gold medals in the individual Flipper race and Manikin Tow, Rory S, Theo H, who won a bronze medal for Manikin Tow, Alfie H, who won a gold medal Manikin Tow, Millie H, who won a gold medal for Manikin Tow and a bronze medal for Board Rescue, and Nola M, who won three gold medals for Flipper Race, Board Race and Tube Rescue, and four silver medals for Board Race, Paired Board, Board Relay and Medley Relay. A huge well done to them all!
The focus for the week then turned to cross country, where our Year 2 pupils hosted several local schools for an afternoon of running that celebrated energy, determination and community spirit. As part of their learning this term, the children have been exploring running across a range of distances and understanding how their bodies respond to exercise. Before the event began, they walked the course, carefully considering the distance and choosing a route they felt confident they could complete without stopping. This thoughtful approach allowed every child to take ownership of their challenge, setting a personal goal and committing to giving their very best.
Once underway, the atmosphere was fantastic, with children cheering one another on and offering encouragement at every turn. The course was filled with determination, teamwork and plenty of smiles as every pupil took part, showed resilience and refused to give up, even when the hills felt steep or the finish line seemed far away. The afternoon ended with a well-earned cookie and drink enjoyed in the sunshine alongside friends, families and teachers. For many, it was their first experience of cross country and a wonderful introduction to the sport.
It was also a pleasure to welcome Archbishop Benson, Truro High and Polwhele House to the Prep School for yet more cross country relay events for Years 3 to 6 later in the week. With more than 120 runners taking part over two days, the event focused on participation and enjoyment rather than results, encouraging pupils to challenge themselves and run to the best of their ability. The tricky conditions did not dampen spirits, and it was fantastic to see runners supporting their teammates throughout.
With the pressure off, every participant performed superbly, and the Truro School Prep runners did themselves and the School proud. Thanks go to the grounds team for preparing the course so beautifully, the catering team for providing welcome refreshments and the spectators for their enthusiastic support.
The week concluded with an exciting Year 5 rugby fixture against Truro High School, played in glorious sunshine on the Prep School playing fields. After a closely contested previous encounter, the team focused on developing both their defensive and attacking play, introducing a unique ‘clicker’ scoring system. Instead of simply counting tries, players tracked successful tackles in defence and completed passes in attack, aiming for a target of 60 passes across the match.
The game proved to be a fantastic spectacle, with both teams showing determination and skill. As tackling improved, the importance of passing became increasingly clear, with the ball moving effectively across the pitch to create space and scoring opportunities. The progress made by the team this term was evident throughout, particularly in their growing confidence and teamwork.
At the final whistle, there was great excitement as the ‘clicker’ totals were revealed, with the team surpassing their target by achieving 63 passes and 28 tackles. It was a brilliant effort from all involved and a fitting end to a week full of sporting achievement.
