It has been a busy week for Sports at Truro School Prep, kicking off with an exciting rugby festival at Millfield on Saturday, as 26 Year 3 and 4s made the trip alongside Mr Frewer, Mr Dove, Mr Silk and Mr Ward for an incredible morning of rugby.
Games against Millfield, Hazlegrove and Monkton came thick and fast and tries a-plenty were scored. Our Year 3 teams were tasked with running fast and forward and challenged to pass before getting tagged as the matches progressed. By midday and the final game, both tasks and challenges had been attempted with some success!
Year 4 is the first time contact is introduced into the game of rugby, so all of our attention so far has been put into how to tackle safely and courageously. Our challenges revolved around this and further developed into how to keep the ball moving and away from a ‘breakdown’ situation. Again, these were met head-on and achieved successfully in some of our games.
Thank you to all the parents who made the journey to support their children; but the biggest thanks go to the children themselves, who represented Truro School Prep so well, some for the first time.
Our U11 girls were in action on the football pitch, taking on a strong side from Polwhele School on Monday. Although they lost their first league match of the season, there were many positives taken from the performance. The team’s resilience and commitment never faltered, and every player grew in confidence as the game progressed. We look forward to taking that energy and enjoyment to the next match.
There was yet more rugby action, with our Year 3 and 4 teams in action against Polwhele House. To allow more children to take part, Truro School Prep selected two teams’ worth of players to compete against Polwhele’s one, including children who hadn’t played previously. Played over four quarters, we started the game looking at running fast and forward in attack and trying to hunt down the ball carrier in defence. Triple tries were awarded for scores that involved passing and running without getting tagged, and even more points were on offer if everyone in the team managed to score! Again, lots of learning was achieved alongside a lot of fun.
Next up were our Years 5 and 6 Tag Rugby teams, also in action against Polwhele House. With two teams once again in play, there was plenty of effort, grit, determination and competitiveness on show. Defence was on top to begin with, but once the teams worked out that passing before getting tagged or passing quickly and supporting the ball once tagged was the way forward, some glorious tries were scored by a whole host of players. There was plenty of vocal support from the sidelines and lots of red faces and smiles on the pitch.
On the hockey pitch, our U11 girls were in action at Truro High, in what was a promising start to the season. In the October sunshine, the whole year group took part in games designed to allow all the girls to get as much time on the ball as possible and utilise the space.
Everyone played extremely well, with a particular well done given to Evelyn, who donned the goalkeeping kit for the first time and had an outstanding match. We are looking forward to our trip up to Mount Kelly next Wednesday.
Our U11 ‘B’ team enjoyed a close match, which was accurately reflected by their 1-1 score at full time. This was a great learning experience for the whole team, many of whom had so much fun that they are now planning to attend the after-school hockey training on Fridays at Truro School. Players of the match (chosen by their opposition) were Lula and Fjola for their speed and determination on the pitch. However, the whole team made considerable progress with their knowledge of the rules, positional awareness and movement of the ball into space during the afternoon.
Well done to all of our confident and courageous pupils, and thanks to all of the staff who made the trips or officiated at matches. Finally, thanks to our incredible parent community for their support, both on the sidelines and at home, getting kits ready and players to and from matches. Your help is greatly appreciated.
